Sex MMS has Mallika in a froth

MUMBAI, July 11: A graphic new MMS of a sex act between a white man and a lookalike of the Bollywood bombshell, Mallika Sherawaat, which began doing the rounds of snazzy handsets on Saturday, has put the actress in a murderous mood.

The MMS has prompted the actress to seek a police probe. The 28-year-old siren, currently in Europe, was "shocked and surprised" when she learnt about the video clip and got onto the phone immediately with her lawyer in Mumbai to deny any connection with the offending clip. The source of the MMS is unknown. The roughly six-minute-long clip is named 'Mallika(1)'.

Vibhav Krishna, her advocate, sent a written complaint to police chief A N Roy and the social security branch at the Cyber Crime Cell of the Mumbai police in the evening seeking an investigation. The letter to the police said, "Our client is a reputed actress of the Hindi film industry. She learnt from her friends that an indecent and obscene video clip in electronic form of virtual sex is being circulated in Mumbai and elsewhere."

The police complaint said, "The video clip depicting pornography with afictitious computer-generated image of a girl's face similar to our client is illegal, illicit and morally repugnant and obscene," and added that it violated Sherawat's constitutional right to privacy, her honour, dignity and reputation.

Her lawyer says that the offence should be probed under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which could punish a first-time offender with five years imprisonment and a Rs 1 lakh fine.

The magazine's editors gave Stone, 47, top marks for still looking stunning without cosmetic surgery. The list of top ten ageless stars: 1. Sharon Stone 2. Marisa Tomei 3. Andie Macdowell 4. Sheryl Crow 5. John Stamos 6. Will Smith 7. Kristin Davis 8. Michell Pfeiffer 9. Tom Cruise 10. Ioni Anderson.

Beyonce falls in love with France!

LONDON, July 9: Destiny's Child singer Beyonce Knowles is reportedly recording an album of Cajun music, after falling in love with France while shooting for new movie Pink Panther there. However, instead of recording it in a traditional French style, she has decided to use the Cajun style developed by French settlers in New Orleans.

"She's really feeling the Cajun vibe. Beyonci's always looking for new musical challenges and wants her next album to have a whole new flavour," femalefirst quoted a source as saying. Beyonce is hoping to release the album, which is a mix of French and American sounds from the Deep South of the USA, shortly after next year's Destiny's Child 'Greatest Hits' record comes out.

JLo tipped to win 'Battle of scents' with Britney!

WASHINGTON, July 9: Celebrities, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears are all set to do battle, with the launch of their new fragrances in September this year. While JLo is launching her fourth scent,'Live Jennifer Lopez' after the huge success of her previous three, Glow, Still and Miami Glow, Spears joined the market only last year with her eau du parfum Curious, and has decided to launch her new fragrance Fantasy.

Creative director for Donegar Creative Services and perfume expert David Wolfe, believes that entrepreneur J.Lo will win the battle of the scents. "Jennifer (will win). Have you seen MONSTER-IN-LAW? She's tough. My feeling is that this trend is going to last as long as celebrities do - I don't see it ending, only accelerating", Femalefirst quoted him as saying.

Diana, Kennedy Jr rode on lust

LONDON, June 28: England's rose, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, had a passionate fling lasting all of a few hours with Johnjohn, President Kennedy's dishy son who died in an aircrash, a new book by Diana's 'energy healer' has claimed.

The book, titled 'Diana: the Last Word', is only the latest in attempts to milk the public's affectionate memory of the princess eight years after her death. Royal watchers said late on Monday that the first shaky premise of the book was its assertion it was "the last word" on Diana. That, it is safe to say, it will not be. The book by Simone Simmons, says Diana and JFK Jr ended up in bed in a posh Manhattan hotel hours after they met.

It claims the fling resulted from a "moment of pure lust". "We started talking, one thing led to another - and we ended up in bed together. "It was pure chemistry," Simmons claims Diana later told her, according to the British tabloid, The Sun. Diana, the book claims, was so taken by the scion of American political royalty, that she had an astrological chart prepared to plot their coming together.

But the stars, Diana found to her dismay, ascribed her brief relationship with Kennedy as compatible but not enough to be long-term. JFK Jr married his slim wand of a bride Carolyn Bessette a year after the alleged affair with the mother of Britain's future king.

On Monday, hours after an extract from the book made headlines around the world, Diana's former butler and confidante and self-appointed guardian of her memory Paul Burrell, described the claims as absolute "nonsense."

Burrell, who has himself milked Diana's memory dry for hefty cash payouts, said witheringly that "Simone has thrown the eye of a newt and bats' wings into a pot and concocted a fantastical story of nonsense in pretty much the same vein as the mystical rubbish she used to feed the princess."

But the book, which claims the venue for the tryst was the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan, which President Kennedy allegedly used for similar lovefests trysts with Marilyn Monroe, was defended by royal-watcher and co-author Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine. Seward insisted that "Everything else Simone has told me about Diana is absolutely true. And I've been in this business for over 20 years. There's no reason for it not to be (true).

"She doesn't have to make it up." But Burrell declared that "none of us should believe is the untruthful, unsupported, nonevidenced invention from Simone that the princess had an affair with JFK Jr. This is simply untrue."

Tom Cruise scales Eiffel to express love

By Deepak Arora

PARIS: Actor Tom Cruise thought of a novel way to propose to his actress girlfriend Katie Holmes. He did so on the top of Eiffel Tower in the romantic city of Paris. Now that Tom and Katie are engaged the versatile actor is already talking of having children, probably to set aside rumours that the engagement is a stunt to promote their respective films.

Tom who was in France to promote the Steven Spielberg film The War of the Worlds proposed to Katie in the early morning of June 17 at the Eiffel Tower. He announced this while speaking to newsmen later in the day. Katie was seated in the second row during the press conference. "Yes, I proposed to her," he said amidst cheers and applause from the crowd of journalists. The couple looked at each other, smiling and blushing. Katie held her hands together in her lap, a massive diamond ring on her finger.

"It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all," he said. "This is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman." When asked why he chose the famed Paris landmark, he said: "I've never been to the Eiffel Tower. It's Paris, it's a beautiful city, and it's very romantic." Tom said no date for a wedding has been set, "We haven't discussed that. One step at a time," he said. "Let's see. We're not sure."

Tom Cruise, 42, was in Paris to promote the Steven Spielberg film War of the Worlds being released in France on July 6. He and Katie Holmes then took a train to Marseille for a special French premiere later in the evening. Casual in a dark T-shirt, he chatted with journalists on the train. Marseille Mayor Jean-Claude Gaudin also honoured Tom Cruise as an honorary citizen of the Mediterranean port city, hours before the gala premiere.

More than 1,000 people crowded around city hall to see the couple, and traffic was blocked off. The star spent nearly an hour shaking hands... ... and signing autographs. Fans carried signs that read, "Welcome, Tom," and "Tom forever." "Merci beaucoup, vive la France," Tom told the cheering crowd, kissing his medal. "It's an extraordinary trip for me," he said in an interview on France-2 television.

He rested up for the French premiere of his movie at the Sofitel's presidential suite, renovated last year for a visit by French President Jacques Chirac. In Paris earlier, Tom said he was a fan of the HG Wells science fiction book on which the film is based, which became a best seller in 1898. "It's a great book, it's timeless," he said.

"I'd read the book before we started working on the movie ... I wanted to make the movie instantly," he said. The film about an alien invasion co-stars Tim Robbins... ...and Justin Chatwin.

"I wish them the happiest marriage that anyone has ever had," said Dakota Fanning, the child actress who co-stars with Tom Cruise in the film. She sat next to Katie during the news conference. Tom and Katie have faced repeated rumors of marriage. The relationship started after Tom split from actress Penelope Cruz, and Katie and actor Chris Klein called off their long-standing engagement.

Tom has also dismissed speculation by tabloid newspapers and celebrity gossip columns that their relationship is a stunt to promote their new movies. Katie was in London earlier this week to promote her new film, Batman Begins. She had also dismissed accusations that the couple had staged a relationship for publicity.

Katie said then that she was embracing Scientology -- Tom's religion. The former star of television's Dawson's Creek grew up with a poster of Tom on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

Angry Miss World denies plastic surgeon rebuilt her

LIMA, PERU, June 23: Miss World, the Peruvian beauty queen Maria Julia Mantilla, said on Wednesday she was considering suing a plastic surgeon after he told the press he had given her buttock implants and trimmed her ears.

"The doctor is presenting photographs that have been altered and you can see, I've never had my ears operated on, I don't have scars, any doctor can come and look at my ears," an indignant Mantilla told RPP radio.

"He said he had built me, that he gave me buttock implants and fixed my ears and this is false -- I'm not the creation of a surgeon, he just did my bust and my nose," the 20-year-old said. "So I'm considering suing."

Her plastic surgeon, Cesar Morillas, one of the most sought-after in Peru, told reporters he had never claimed to be the "creator" of Mantilla. The pair had a promotional agreement before Mantilla was crowned Miss Peru, in which she would publicize his clinic in exchange for operations. "But (the contract) ran out in April and he's still using me for publicity," she said.

Mantilla, crowned in December 2004, is training to climb a 20,360 feet (6,206 metre) Himalayan peak in July to raise money for children in Tibet.

Sartorial shock as school bans skirts

LONDON, June 24: Girls at an English junior high school will be banned from wearing skirts from January next year, in a move their teachers hope will help them maintain their "modesty".

Broadstone Middle School in Poole, Dorset, which announced its decision in a newsletter to parents, said it will expect all 673 of its pupils, aged nine to 13, to turn up for classes in full-length trousers instead.

"In order to give girls the same opportunities as boys for a safe, active and healthy lifestyle, while maintaining their modesty, it has been considered by our school governors that trousers for all pupils is a practical and appropriate dress requirement," said headteacher (principal) Marilyn Warden.

Some parents were reportedly unhappy at the idea of banning skirts -- a common uniform for schoolgirls all over Britain -- and suspected it was being imposed because some girls have been wearing their skirts well above the knee.

Warden said that she would welcome parents' comments -- but pointed out that boys have not been required to wear shorts to school for many years. "This move," she argued, "is meant to enhance all of our pupils' overall educational experience."

Michael Jackson acquitted on all counts

SANTA MARIA, California, June 14: A jury acquitted Michael Jackson on Monday of molesting a 13-year-old cancer survivor at his Neverland ranch, vindicating the pop star who insisted he was the victim of mother-and-son con artists and a prosecutor with a vendetta.

Jurors also acquitted him of conspiring to imprison his accuser and the boy's family at the storybook estate - a total legal victory but one that may do little to improve his bizarre image.

The verdict - reached after about 30 hours of deliberations over seven days - ended a star-studded, four-month trial that offered a global audience a lurid look into the weird world of Michael Jackson and presented jurors with vastly different portraits of him: a creepy pervert who preyed on little boys, or the victim of a frame-up by mother-and-son shakedown artists.

Veer-Zaara sweeps IIFA Awards

AMSTERDAM, June 13: Yash Chopra's Indo-Pak romance epic "Veer-Zaara" swept the sixth IIFA awards in Amsterdam Saturday night. The movie won the best actor, best director, best film, best music, best story and best supporting actress awards.

Shah Rukh Khan was the obvious choice for the best actor award, and his win surprised few. Yash Chopra, who won in the best director category, had last directed "Dil to Pagal Hai" in 1997. Aditya Chopra bagged the best story award for his father's romantic saga. Rani Mukherjee was a beaming best actress for "Hum Tum", another Yash Chopra production. She also won the best supporting actress award for "Veer-Zaara". In fact, Rani has established a record of sorts by winning double honours at almost every award function this year.

The best music director award was given to the late Madan Mohan. The late genius' son Sanjeev Kohli who re-created Madan Mohan's tunes for the film, paid a sentimental tribute to his father, who in spite of being a powerhouse of talent, never won a popular award during his lifetime.

Abhishek Bachchan walked away with the best supporting actor's award for "Yuva", and John Abraham was the best villain - for "Dhoom". The pretty Ayesha Takia was announced as the best debutante. Surprisingly, Sammir Dattani's notable debut has gone unacknowledged through all the popular award ceremonies this year. The rest of the awards were no surprises, except Akshay Kumar who was chosen for best comic role in "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi".

Beauty is no longer skin deep: Aishwarya

AMSTERDAM, June 13: Aishwarya Rai is ecstatic about being designated the ninth most beautiful woman in the world by British magazine Harpers & Queen and hopes people stop calling her "giggly and frivolous".

"I felt quite thrilled when my mother showed me the poll results in Harpers & Queen. What really made me happy was the quality and calibre of the women whom I share the list with. "If you run through the list you'd see that beauty is no longer skin deep. Every woman there is an achiever in every sense. They're all women of substance, and not just from visible professions like acting and modeling," says Ash.

The Bollywood star was speaking from Amsterdam where she is attending the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony. "I'm so happy to see filmmaker Sophia Coppola somewhere at the top of the list. Or Charlotte Rampling who's aging oh-so-gracefully and is so beautuful. And Uma Thurman. She has an Indian-sounding name and is so mesmeric in her attitude to life and profession."

She said: "I think beauty has come to be defined by many other far more profound qualities than looks and posture. I hope people would stop holding my looks against me and labelling me giggly and frivolous. The giggle, as I've said to you before, is my defence mechanism, and not a sign of intellectual scarcity. Please!"

And what about being ninth on the list? "What about it?" Ash counters. "I don't think the list is a numbers game. Every woman who is named in that list is equally beautiful. Yeah, I'm so happy for Angelina Jolie who's at no.1. I think she's so gorgeous and so real. She's a student of yoga and she works for the UN. She's a complete personality, and illustrates what feminine beauty means in the new millennium."

Says Ash: "Everyone on that list is an achiever. And, yeah, I've begun to think I've done a little to get into the list."

I was wild, marriage changed me: Madonna

It is confession time for pop star Madonna. Though she has never hidden her wild ways from the media or her fans, the singer in an interview to a women's magazine talks candidly about her reformed wild ways, the poison of television and the struggle of balancing a successful marriage with motherhood.

"I can assure you, five years ago, there's no way I would have said, 'I'm going to write kids' books and give all the money to charity," the singer said. "I never thought I'd be doing that, but I like the idea people can change, and that everybody has to go through a painful process before they can realise they're idiots."

On her former wild escapades, Madonna admits, "Sometimes now, I sit back and say, 'What was I thinking before I was thinking?' There were times I really had an altruistic goal and wanted to help people. And then other times I just wanted to show off. Let's just call a spade a spade. I knew I could get people to pay attention to me."

The interview comes close on the heels of the release of Madonna's latest children's book Lotsa De Casha, for which there was a special reading organised for the children.

PVR plans 200-250 new screens across India

AMSTERDAM, June 11: Multiplex chain PVR plans to set up 200-250 new cinema screens in its theatres across India within the next two years. "We plan to set up 200-250 screens across the country in the next 24 months. I foresee a 100-120 per cent annual growth in this sector," according to Ajay Bijli, head of multiplex chain PVR, who was here to attend the Global Business Forum.

"The appetite for films still needs to be tapped. We are now moving away from the metros and focussing on the smaller cities," he said. Beginning commercial operations in June 1997 with the launch of the PVR Anupam multiplex in New Delhi, the company went on to command a significant presence in the major metros and is now targetting smaller towns.

"Indian cinema is the USP of the country, just like the Taj Mahal and we need to showcase it abroad," Bijli said when asked how the Global Business Forum would help the entertainment sector.

Angelina Jolie attacks TV show host!

WASHINGTON, June 8: Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has reportedly attacked TV show host Ann Curry for showing viewers a copy of US Weekly magazine, which featured her Kenyan beach stroll with Brad Pitt and son Maddox.

"You bought it, you're holding it... The fact is its part of your programme. It's something that we're talking about still," Contactmusic quoted Jolie as saying. The actress, who has put a ban on reporters asking her about her alleged romance with Pitt, was upset to see her photograph on the show.

She continued to insist that her Kenyan holiday meant a lot to her. "That day needs to forever be a day that I made a sandcastle with my son," she said.

Woman sends fiancé and son on sex trip!

LONDON, June 7: Singer and TV presenter Coleen Nolan, has arranged for her son, Shane Jr, as well as her fiancé, Ray Fensome, to have sex with prostitutes. 40-year old Coleen made the shocking arrangement for her son as a reward for passing his GCS examination. She even admitted that she had no qualms about sending Ray on a sex trip to Amsterdam as long as he told her all the intimate details.

"I said, 'Ray will have to go with you' and he said, 'Well then, Ray might sleep with a prostitute too'," she told ITV1's Loose Women show. "I said, 'Oh, that's all right, it's only a prostitute'. I wouldn't throw away the father of my children and all that for the sake of lads being lads", she was quoted by The Mirror, as saying.

Talking to her co-presenters, Coleen who is also a mother to Jack, aged 13 and Circa, aged 4 even acknowledged that she was a little bit kinky. "As long as he comes back and tells me about it. I'm not joking, I'd love it. There's something a little bit kinky about me."

NEW YORK, June 2: Britney Spears is loving life as a pregnant woman - the cravings, watching sonograms and especially the sex. "I think it's better than it was before," Spears tells People magazine in the issue on newsstands Friday. "I think it's best. Sex is crazy good."

The 23-year-old pop star, who's due this fall, says that she's been battling "horrible" morning sickness and been dealing with the hormone swings that have caused her to lose her temper, "like twice." But otherwise, Spears says she's in "nesting mode" and finds being pregnant "empowering."

"I think it brings out a pure side of you," she says. After first seeing a sonogram of her baby, Spears was speechless. "You can't really say anything. I was emotional. I think it's the best feeling in the world."

Spears says that she hasn't yet tried to find out whether it's a boy or a girl - but doesn't expect it to be her last, regardless. She ultimately wants three children and doesn't plan to return to her day job soon. "I'm sure there's going to come a time when I get back to work again, but it'll be a totally different way of life than it was before," she says.

Spears and her husband, Kevin Federline, are also currently starring in their reality show on UPN, "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic." The six-episode series features pre-pregnancy home videos of the couple's dating, engagement and wedding. "It's so different for me, doing something like this," said Spears of the show. "My friends think it's cool."

Paris Hilton engaged to shipping heir

LOS ANGELES, June 1: Who says opposites attract? Hotel heiress Paris Hilton, star of "The Simple Life" reality show, is engaged to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, her spokesman said Monday.

"They are happy and excited," said Rob Shuter, confirming the story first reported on People magazine's Web site. Latsis, 27, proposed to Hilton, 24, on Wednesday after she returned from a three-week publicity tour in Europe to promote her horror flick, "House of Wax," and her new fragrance. No wedding date has been set. It would be the first marriage for both.

Latsis is a grandson of John Latsis, the last of Greece's shipping billionaires from the postwar boom years, who died in 2003 at 93. In March, Forbes magazine's ranking of the world's richest people listed the Latsis family at No. 54 with a combined wealth of $7.5 billion.

"I'm so in love and grateful to have found such an honest and loyal person," Hilton told Us Weekly. "I feel like we were meant to be, and I'm happy to have found someone to spend the rest of my life with." The magazine quoted Latsis as calling Hilton "the most beautiful woman I've ever met. I feel like the luckiest man in the world."

The couple, who have been dating for about eight months, marked the engagement Saturday with a barbecue for 75 friends and family at their Hollywood Hills home, Shuter said.

Hilton is also currently appearing in a new Carl's Jr. ad. The spot, which shows Hilton frolicking with a water hose, last week drew the ire of media watchdog group Parents Television Council.

Groom lets friends rape his bride

LAHORE, June 1: Three men gang-raped a newly married woman with the consent of her in-laws in what police described as an act of revenge
The incident occurred in Dera Ghazi Khan town in Pakistan Punjab.

According to Ghulam Hussain, the father of the victim Kaneez Kubra, his daughter was married to Mujahid Hussain on April 28. This was ordered by a panchayat (local jury) as Kaneez's brother Abdul Majid had sexual relations with Mujahid's sister Sumera.

After the wedding, Kaneez Kubra went to the groom's home. Her husband stayed with her in their room till 11 pm and then left, Daily Times reported Monday. Mujahid's grandfather Shahroo Khan and his mother Mukhtar then came in and told the bride that the wedding was just an excuse to exact revenge on Majid for outraging Sumera's modesty.

Mujahid Hussain then called in three friends - Muhammad Rafiq, Shabbir Muhammad and Abdul Majid Almani - who gang-raped the bride. The next day, Mujahid Hussain took her to the house of his friend Ghulam Mustafa, who also assaulted her. On April 30, when Ghulam Hussain and other relatives arrived to take Kaneez. back as per tradition, she related the story to her father.

When Ghulam Hussain approached the police, they refused to register a case against the groom and his friends. He then approached the higher authorities, who ordered that a case be registered.

"We have registered a case against seven people - (groom) Mujahid Hussain, his friends Muhammad Rafiq, Shabbir Muhammad, Abdul Majid Almani and Ghulam Mustafa, his grandfather Shahroo Khan, and mother Mukhtar Mai," Dera Ghazi Khan district police officer Salman Chaudhry told Daily Times. All the accused left the area and went into hiding after the cases were registered, Chaudhry added.

11 wives, 25 kids and going strong

LONDON, June 1: Africa's 36-year-old, last absolute monarch King Mswati III of Swaziland, has married a lecturer's daughter Noliqwa Ntentesa in a secret ceremony, making her his 11th wife. 21-year-old Noliqwa is pregnant with his 25th child, and under Swazi tradition a King can only marry a woman after she becomes pregnant.

The King also plans to make two 17-year-old women as his 12th and 13th wives, and one of them is also pregnant, reports The Mirror.

King Mswati is often accused for living in lavish palaces and having a luxurious lifestyle where more than one million of the people living in his kingdom suffer from poverty and misery. However, the monarch is yet to reach the mark made by his father, King Sobhuza II, who had 70 wives when he died in 1982.

Canadian wins Miss Universe 2005

BANGKOK, May 31: Blue-eyed Canadian brunette Natalie Glebova was on Tuesday crowned Miss Universe 2005 in the Thai capital in the 54th annual pageant. The model and motivational speaker from Toronto was chosen from five finalists -- the four others from Latin America -- who were selected to answer random questions onstage in the final round of the competition.

The 12-judge panel chose beauties from Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Canada for the final round. Glebova, 23, was picked over runner-up Cynthia Olavarria of Puerto Rico after answering a final question about what she considered the biggest challenge of her life. "I always try to maintain a positive outlook on life," she said, adding that remaining optimistic was most challenging.

Earlier, judges narrowed the field of 81 contestants, including Amrita Thapar from India, to 15, then 10 during the competition as the Miss Universe hopefuls modelled evening gowns and swimsuits.

Earlier, last year's title winner, Jennifer Hawkins of Australia, described her achievement as a fairy tale-like experience. But she said her later work publicizing humanitarian projects underscored the real-world responsibilities that come with the crown.

Thailand hopes that hosting the pageant will boost the country's tourism sector, which was badly hurt by last December's tsunami. It estimates that the event and related activities will generate more than 2.1 billion baht (US$54.6 million; euro41.6 million) of revenue. "I hope that the Miss Universe contest will help encourage tourists back to the tsunami-hit areas because arrivals are very low and hotel room occupancy (rates) are less than 15 percent,'' said Vijit Naranong, president of the Thai Tourist Association's southern chapter.

Contestants in the Miss Universe pageant arrived in Thailand about three weeks ago and have since visited tsunami-struck areas along the southern coast and historic Buddhist temples around BangkokPhotos of bikini-clad contestants posing near a revered temple stirred up a controversy in the predominantly Buddhist country. The images showed the contestants aboard a boat on Bangkok's Chao Phraya river with Wat Arun, the famous Temple of the Dawn, in the background.

After the Thai government complained about the images two weeks ago, organizers promised to remove them from the pageant's Web site and pull them from video footage to be broadcast during Tuesday's competition.

The contestants also have driven the country's famous three-wheeled motorcycle taxis, called tuk-tuks, and ridden atop elephants -- Thailand's national symbols.

Beauty waves rock the land of Thailand

THAILAND, May 31: Beauty watchers around the globe are gearing up for Tuesday's glamour-infused Miss Universe finale in Bangkok where one of 81 women will be crowned after a flurry of events highlighting Asia's post-tsunami reconstruction.

With the D-Day arriving one elated young woman replaces Australia's Jennifer Hawkins as the new Miss Universe, odds makers have the Latin Americans and Caribbeans as favourites to wear the crown. Topping the list are Miss Puerto Rico Cynthia Olavarria, Renata Sone of Dominican Republic, Canada's Natalie Glebova and Miss Venezuela Monica Spear.

The US-run competition is being held in Thailand five months after giant waves decimated coastlines around the Indian Ocean and killed more than 217,000 people. About 5,400 died in Thailand, half of them foreign holidaymakers, and more than 2,800 are missing. As part of a hectic three-week schedule here contestants showcased the country's recovery from the tsunami in an effort to convince tourists it is safe to return to the Land of Smiles.

The beauty queens traveled to the tourist islands of Phuket and Phi Phi, visited a hospital which treated tsunami victims, and inspected a new disaster warning system on a Phuket beach.

Footage of the trip will be aired during Tuesday's show. The Thai government said it paid some $6.5 million for rights to host the pageant, which one organiser described as "a two-hour promotional vehicle for Thailand."

The kingdom has seen its massive tourism industry crumble in the wake of the December 26 disaster and authorities have made no secret of their hopes that the pageant will help reverse their fortunes. "Everyone here wholly appreciates that the pageant is being held in Asia," Paula Shugart, president of Miss Universe Organisation".

With the 54th pageant to be broadcast live during prime time to the United States and many of the 170 other markets airing the show, those vying for the tiara will be forced to look their best at an unseemly hour, taking the stage in glamorous evening gowns as early as 8 am Thai time.

Amid signs that the taste for pageants is waning in the United States and Europe, the show's executive producer Phil Gurin said organizers were intent on infusing a greater sense of haute couture and grandeur into the spectacle. "We're celebrating 81 of the most beautiful women in the world, and we've worked hard to eliminate the 'cheese' factor and replace it with high fashion glamour," Gurin said.

3 Bollywood actresses in sex scandals

NEW DELHI, May 30: Investigations into the escapades of Delhi's super pimp Kanwaljeet threaten to prise open - if not fully unravel - the seamier side of the country's glamour industry. At least three Bollywood actresses and several models are under the Delhi Police scanner for their alleged involvement in Kanwaljeet's sex empire, which apparently spanned several countries.

Kanwaljeet had named these actresses immediately after his arrest last month, but at that time there was no material to establish his claims. Investigations into Kanwaljeet's diaries and telephone records, however, suggest that his statements might not be mere kite-flying.

According to sources in the police, one of these actresses - who recently made her debut in Bollywood - visited Singapore and Bangkok several times last year allegedly to entertain businessmen. For each trip, she was reportedly paid Rs 3 lakh.

Another actress who was apparently "registered" with Kanwaljeet comes from a family of starlets. The third actress has been around only for the last two years and all the films featuring her have bombed at the box office. These two actresses reportedly charged Rs 1-2 lakh per outing.

"He has taken other names. Some of them are well established actresses. But we can't say with certainty whether they were involved in the sex racket," said a senior police official. The official, however, said Kanwaljeet was yet to give a written statement about the involvement of these stars.

Help! there's a camera in my skirt

HONG KONG, May 26: A Hong Kong man was arrested after he was found using his high-tech pinhole camera installed on the surface of his shoe in an attempt to peep under the skirt of a young woman, police said on Wednesday. The 38-year-old man, surnamed Yeung, went up to the woman in a shop and stood close behind her before putting his right foot between hers, police said.

He was caught in the act by the victim's suspicious husband, who apprehended him when he attempted to flee the scene. It was later discovered that the surface of Yeung's black trainer was equipped with a pinhole camera linked with electrical wire inside his trousers all the way up to the bag he was carrying, police said.

The Apple Daily newspaper said the wire was connected to a handheld video camera in his bag. Yeung managed to destroy the tape with the images of the victim before police arrived, it said.

First international erotic fair to be held in Belgrade

BELGRADE, May 21: The first ever erotic fair will be organized in Belgrade next weekend with the participation of international pin-up stars led by Playboy bunny Dita Von Teese, according to an official. More than thirty movie distributors, erotic magazines, sex-shops and lingerie designers will take part in a three-day long fair, to be opened on May 26, Andjelko Tripkovic, manager of the Belgrade fair, told reporters on Friday.

The decision to organize such fair came after a survey conducted in January, which has showed that a majority of those questioned backed the idea, Trpkovic added.

The event was also supported by three Hungarian agencies -- X-clusive, Model and Bella model -- whose stripteasers will entertain the public, as well as the Serbian edition of Playboy. Hungary, which borders Serbia in the north, has become an important player in the international erotic and sex industry.

College girl proves that sex sells!

WAYNE (New Jersey), May 22: A 21-year-old college business major living in this northern New Jersey community has proven a basic lesson of marketing: Sex sells. Courtney Van Dunk posted a bikini-clad picture of herself on eBay about two weeks ago, auctioning off space on her body for advertisers.

The auction ended on Thirsday with a winning bid from a New Jersey wine retailer offering $11,300 for a month's worth of advertising. Van Dunk, though, says the offer has been retracted, but she's confident she's made contacts with enough companies to still earn some cash.

When she finds a buyer, Van Dunk plans to place temporary tattoos on her abdomen while she's at the beach, or on other body parts when she's at the mall, sporting events, amusement parks and other public places. Her butt and chest are off limits. "I got the idea from a marketing class I had that did a short segment on body advertising," Van Dunk said. "I was wondering how advertising could get through to our TV-savvy generation, and I thought this would be an excellent way to do it."

Van Dunk says the first round of bidding drew inquiries from as far away as Zambia. The Web site halted that auction because she had links to other sites promoting her efforts, so Van Dunk then held a second auction, which lasted seven days. Van Dunk credits moderate exercise and healthy eating for the fit figure that has earned worldwide interest. "We never ate a lot of fast food or greasy things growing up. My mom is an excellent cook."

Britney's sex tale bombs on TV

LONDON: Singer Britney Spears put her private life on show, including the love story with her current husband, in the first part of the documentary Chaotic broadcast late Tuesday on UPN cable television channel.

The 50-minute film, often shot with a hand-held camera by Britney herself, raises the curtain on the pop star's daily life while on tour in Britain, including her make-up and warm-up sessions and excerpts of the show itself.

But between the images of her work-filled routine, filmed before she met her husband, the loneliness shows through. "Do you believe in marriage and engagement?" she asks her hairdresser, make-up artist, bodyguard and driver. With no great hits and chartbusters to her credit,

Britney Spears hasn't stopped hogging the limelight and leaves no opportunity that comes her way to hog the limelight. If she's not getting sued for possibly singing someone else's song, she's getting ready to produce and star in a terrible-sounding film.

And now, to add to all the madness, Tuesday saw the premier of her reality television show, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic..., who has had no hits in the past year. MSNBC says "it makes Survivor look like cinema verite", and report that Britney only ever talks about sex, all the time, like a filthy man in a raincoat on a park bench.

USA Today reveals that the opening shot of the show was a close-up of Britney's knees. "They look like boobs, but they're not. They're my knees", Britney points out, finally putting an end to the age old 'are they boobs or knees?' debate.

The critic from The Washington Post notes the profound philosophy of Kevin Federline when asked about love. "Love is love", he tells us. There's a chance he went on to declare "a pen is a pen" and... ... "a lapdancer is a lapdancer". The Boston Globe called it "a tedious public exercise in self-importance" and show a small amount of pity for Felicia, Britney's assistant/servant/performing monkey/whipping girl.

Though there are people who do believe that the show would be panned even if it featured tap-dancing elephants and an appearance from Zombie Princess Diana. When one of them puts the same question to her, Britney answers: "I don't believe in marriage. You know, I was married," referring to her wedding in Las Vegas to her childhood friend Jason Alexander last January. It lasted a mere 55 minutes before it was annulled.

Britney says she is looking for "someone kinda sweet and nice and that loves me a lot." But there's also the argument that watching a young woman pushing a video camera inches from her own face and talking self-absorbed claptrap doesn't actually constitute entertainment. Like we said, we have no clue about chaos that has romped the television, but we would like to know more about it from the people who have seen it.

Pop princess Kylie diagnosed with breast cancer

SYDNEY, May 19: Australian pop star Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo immediate treatment, her management said on Tuesday, announcing the postponement of her Asian and Australian tours.

The 36-year-old singer, who once auctioned one of her bras to promote breast cancer awareness, flew into Australia last week to spend time with her family before the start of the Australian leg of her Showgirl tour.

Minogue, who first found fame in the 1980s in the soap opera Neighbours before launching a pop career which has seen her sell an estimated 40 million records, apologised to fans for the postponement of the shows but said she hoped to be back performing soon. "I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl tour to Australian audiences, and am sorry to have to disappoint my fans," she said in a statement issued by the Frontier Touring Company.

"Nevertheless hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon." Minogue was said to have been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer while at home with her family in Melbourne this week. "She's a pretty fit girl and a strong girl, and hopefully it (the cancer) is pretty early," her promoter Michael Gudinski told a press conference.

Gudinski said Minogue had a "tough few weeks ahead of her" but had the support of all Australians. "The one thing I know about Kylie is, she's a fighter, and we're all thinking very, very positively and can't wait for the day she is smiling and back in action."

Billy Leung, a Hong Kong-based spokesman for Minogue's record company EMI, said shows in Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong would also be cancelled. She has just finished a long European tour and was scheduled to headline the prestigious Glastonbury music festival in southwest England in late June.

Accompanying Minogue in Melbourne is her French boyfriend, film star Olivier Martinez. Her sister and fellow pop star Dannii was also expected to fly home from London. Minogue, who turns 37 next week, rose to fame in Australia and Britain in the 1980s playing a girl-next-door role in Neighbours but found spectacular success in a pop career launched in 1987.

She has since scored more than three dozen hit singles worldwide, including over 20 top 10 hits and seven number ones over three decades in Britain, as well as nine top-selling albums. In the process she transformed herself from a gawky teenager with frizzed hair to a svelte sex symbol with a penchant for raunchy videos, appearing as cover girl on dozens of glossy magazines and even launching her own lingerie line.

Her first major hit was a cover of Little Eva's 1960s hit "Do The Locomotion" in the early 1980s. After a lower profile 1990s, her career was given a boost when the disco-influenced "Can't Get You Out of My Head" topped the charts worldwide in 2001. Her sometimes turbulent love life has also been popular tabloid fodder, notably her relationships with late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, Neighbours star Jason Donovan and current Hollywood heart throb Martinez.

Kylie has been a promoter of breast cancer awareness and in 2002 one of her bras sold for 6,880 dollars (5,685 US dollars) at an auction to raise money for research into the illness. Commentators have said that Minogue was prompted to campaign against the disease once her childhood idol, Olivia Newton-John, was diagnosed with the illness.

"Kylie is very much like Olivia Newton-John. Olivia has had breast cancer and dealt with it," music journalist Molly Meldrum told Sky News. In 2002 Minogue's father was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Australians, who initially viewed Minogue's pop career with scepticism, have grown to respect the ever-changing icon. More than 290,000 people flocked to a three-month exhibition of her outfits, including gold lame hotpants, in Melbourne last week.

Hundreds of people registered their sadness on the star's official website after hearing news of her illness. "I don't know how to accurately describe how I am feeling right now. SHOCK is the best word that comes to mind," wrote Matt from Queensland.

Karisma's marriage on the rocks?

NEW DELHI, May 18: Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor's marriage to Delhi-based industrialist Sanjay Kapur is on the rocks, according to media reports. The actress, who had moved to Mumbai for childbirth, had been living in Delhi with her husband post marriage.

The reports say that the actress has no intentions of reconciling with her husband. She had been very unhappy with Sanjay for the last six months and didn't want to share her life with him anymore. A close friend confided the couple had been in a tumultuous married life for sometime.

When approached, neither the actress nor her family were ready to speak about it. Before her marriage to Sanjay Kapur, Karisma was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan.

Mallika dazzles at Cannes Film Festival

CANNES, May 18: Mallika Sherawat charmed one and all when she appeared at a packed press conference in Cannes, alongside Jackie Chan, the producer and star of her debut international movie, The Myth. She wore a low-cut golden dress and posed with Chan for the photocall, minutes before the press conference began.

Sherawat wore enough jewellery in keeping with her status as an "Indian princess". She said she plans to wear some thing "outrageously sexy" for the Cannes party. Sherawat began by graciously commenting: "I would like to thank Jackie Chan and Stanley Tong for giving me this opportunity to star in this film. It's a very big break for me. Bollywood will always be very important (for me) because that's my bread and butter. But the whole world is becoming global now."

While Sherawat shone and sparkled, her co-actress, Kim Hee Seon, a Korean, was equally elegant and exquisitely beautiful. Also present in the conference were The Myth 's director, Stanley Tony, and the actor, Tony Leung Ka Fai. Chan explained that although he was keen to collaborate with Bollywood - and if he ever made a film himself he would go into partnership with India - the Indian involvement in The Myth was for him "a coincidence".

Mallika said that "India and China coming together" also appealed to her. She added, "It's a great opportunity for me to be working with a superstar like Jackie Chan (and also with) Stanley Tong. It's a role to die for. (For me) it's a great debut internationally."

Mallika's postcard from Cannes

CANNES, May 19: As I board my plane to unexplored anthropological territory - there aren't enough documentaries on TV on the French - I'm experiencing simultaneous feelings of trepidation, anticipation and exhilaration.

But what does all this mean to me? Cannes is not only the oldest film festival in the world, having started in 1939, but is, and has been for quite some time, the most famous. I remember Clint Eastwood saying, "There's nothing else quite like it" and I can't wait.

This is where Brigitte Bardot strutted around in that famous, flowery two-piece bikini on the Croisette in 1953, and where Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1955, and where they got married the following year, continuing the tradition started by Rita Hayworth in 1949, when she married Aly Khan, the flamboyant son of The Aga Khan.

I think back to Madonna's outrageous appearance in her conical bra in 1991, and Coppola, Polanski, Almodovar and the Coen Brothers walking up to receive their Palme d'Ors, and slowly the magnitude of this grand festival and the significance of the hallowed turf I'll be walking on sinks in.

I'll be staying at the Hotel Martinez, where Dustin Hoffman stayed while he was here (maybe the same room?) and sharing space with Robert Rodriguez, John Woo, Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis and most of all Jackie Chan!

Cannes is a place where art and commerce clash and embrace. Where auteurs and moviestars walk shoulder to shoulder and I thank heavens I'm here as Jackie Chan's leading lady. Jackie Chan, a true original - as artistically gifted as Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin and as commercially popular as James Bond.

Norse Code: Sex, orgy & stubbies

OSLO, May 14: Having sex with 17 people in as many days, downing a case of beer in 24 hours and making out with a student of the same sex are just a few of the escapades many Norwegian high school students get up to each May in a well-established pre-graduation tradition.

Every year, some 30,000 teens about to graduate from high school take part in massive celebrations that go on unabated from May 1 until they culminate in a huge blow-out on Norway's national holiday on May 17.

"These festivities have the same feel of liberation as a carnival in a Mediterranean country: you take a break from everyday existence, you put on a mask and you do everything that is off-limits the rest of the year," anthropologist and author of a thesis on the subject Allan Sande said.

Recognised by the red or blue uniforms that indicate what high school they attend, the "russ", as these near-graduates are called, attempt to carry out a number of feats to earn small "trophies" tied to the tassel and the brim of their caps.

Staying awake for 72 consecutive hours earns you a black ribbon tied to the tassel, taking a dip in an icy fjord before May 1 earns you an ice cream stick, having sex in a tree earns you a twig, while abstaining from sex for the entire 17-day period earns you a safety-pin.

"It is true that some of the challenges are 'border line' but we have toned down a number of the rules this year due to health reasons," Oslo's russ president Anette Sophie Fuglesang said. "Earlier, one had to drink a case of beer in six hours instead of the 24 today" to earn the right to a beer cap, she pointed out in a cracking, whiskey voice. And all references to sex are now accompanied with a recommendation to use a condom," she added.

The word 'russ' comes from the Latin 'Cornua Depositurus', or removing the horn, which refers to an ancient tradition in which a censor removed a horn that had been attached to a student's forehead to indicate that he had passed his entrance exam to university.

Considering the huge amounts of alcohol consumed by the high school students who have just reached the legal drinking age of 18, it is also ironic that "russ" phonetically resembles "rus", the Norwegian word for "intoxication". For many russ, the celebrations throughout the month of May serve as an initiation rite marking their first foray into sexual relations and heavy drinking.

This sometimes has a tragic outcome. Over recent years, a number of youths have died of meningitis, which spreads rapidly among the russ indulging in intimate relations and beer-sharing.

There are also numerous car accidents as the students drive from party to party, and a number of girls are raped each year by other students or by men who gravitate to the huge gatherings of young and intoxicated russ.

While the festivities often get out of hand, the money some students spend on the celebrations, and especially on transportation to and from the parties, can be even more shocking.

The russ get together in small groups and invest in red or blue-painted vans or busses that they equip with huge loudspeakers and loud, melodious horns to keep the party rocking and neighbors awake all night.

This year, 28 high school students from the upscale Baerum suburbs near Oslo spent a whopping 800,000 kroner (127,000 dollars, 99,000 euros) on buying and outfitting their "russebuss".

While the wild parties and crazy pranks are hotly debated in Norway each year, many feel that the most disturbing element of the celebrations is that they take place as the students are writing their final exams.

Now, celebrate an official Orgasm Day!

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 10: Sex rarely makes the news in Brazil's conservative Northeast - until a small town has declared an official Orgasm Day.
Espertantina Mayor Felipe Santolia endorsed the holiday on Monday, which he said was intended to improve relationships between married couples.

"We're celebrating orgasm in all its senses. There's even a panel discussion on premature ejaculation. But from what I've seen, women have more trouble achieving orgasm than men, especially in marriage," Santolia said by telephone from Esperantina, 2,100 km north of Rio de Janeiro. Santolia said the remote town of 38,000 people has been unofficially celebrating orgasm day for years, but that the town's former mayor had vetoed a bill making it an official municipal holiday.

The city council passed a law Saturday creating the holiday. "I'm 32, single and I have an open mind. Beside the theme is very much of the moment," he said. Orgasm Day celebrations include a series of panel discussions by sexologists from across Brazil and a presentation of Eve Ensler's play 'The Vagina Monologues.'

Santolia said the idea of celebrating Orgasm Day at first created a scandal in this poor region, known for its religious fervour. But he said residents gradually warmed to the idea. "I've seen scientific studies that show when a woman is unloved, when her husband can bring her to orgasm, it affects all aspects of her life, her relationships with her children, at home, with the city and at work," Santolia said.

LIFW: A business-like fashion statement

By Deepak Arora

NEW DELHI: The recent sixth Lakme India Fashion Week in the Capital was a grand success as displayed style with business maturity. It showcased creativity and competence of the Indian designer fraternity and prepared them for massive growth at home and readied them to debut on the world stage.

As designer Raghayendra Rathore said: "This has been the most mature fashion week. We have finally grown up to the fact that this is primarily a business event and that should never be diluted." For years, fashion weeks in India have been a melee of glamour and partying where Page Three and celebrity antics overshadowed trade moves in the $50-60 million industry.

However, this time it was a different story. Elisabeth Pedersen, designer room (women's wear) buyer for London's Selfridges, said "the fashion week was very well organised and it was fairly buyer-friendly. It was all very well coordinated. It helps that everything was under one roof, at one venue, unlike in London where you rush from place to place. There was a sense of business-like approach."

Rathi Vinay Jha, head of the apex Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) that organised the fashion week, said "none of the designers had time for anything but business this year." Rathi hopes this purposefulness would drive the industry to around $225 million in the next 10 years.

It is also this seriousness that has helped designers like Anamika Khanna pre-sell their collection to Harrods. "There is great dynamism in the market," said Khanna. "People are look every carefully at us."

There is certainly no dearth of demand. "I came back to the fashion week this year looking for genuine spark," said Michael Fink, senior fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue. "We believe that India has something that no other country does and if it uses its wealth of textiles and heritage in the right way, it can make an enormous difference. Many designers here know their customer and their collections are very focused."

Several international designers and top retail outlets, an indication that the global fashion industry is keeping a close watch on its Indian counterpart attended the fashion week. The presence of outlets like Selfridges, Harrods and internationally reputed designers will shape the opinions on Indian fashion Industry worldwide.

What was new at the sixth edition of the biggest fashion trade event? Says Rathi: For the first time the even saw maximum participation from fashion designers - 63 designers up from 57 last year. "We also showcased four accessory designers in the designer stalls to broad base the platform for other stakeholders in the industry. The number of shows increased from 35 to 39 this year to provide an opportunity for more talent that our country is brimming with."

Commenting on the show, Anil Chopra, Vice President, Lakme Lever, said "we at Lakme believe that beauty and fashion are two sides of the same coin. Through Lakme's association with India's biggest fashion even for the sixth year in a succession, Lakme has displayed a deep-rooted commitment towards development of the beauty and fashion industry." At LIFW, said Anil Chopra, "Lakme aims to provide the consumer a holistic beauty experience, which is fusion of beauty, style and fashion."

The popularity of the event showed that the clamour for designer brands is growing in the country. By 2006-07, around 50 million sq ft of retail space would be up for grabs across the country - more than half of this is expected to be filled by fashion and lifestyle goods, which are the fastest moving in the segment. The fashion segment has a potential of drawing Rs 200 billion ($4.5 billion) in retail sales in coming years.

Some of the top designers who participated in the event include Ritu Kumar, Rina Dhaka, Rocky S, Suneet Varma, Satya Paul, Manish Arora, Varun Bahl, Raghavendra Rathore, JJ Valaya, Tarun Tahiliani, Manju Bobby Grover and Rohit Bal.

The show predicted laughing yellows, delicious greens and glistening browns as the colours of summer. The theme of the show was Peppermint. Speaking on the theme for the show, Chopra said, "Peppermint is perfect for the summer because it's fresh and cool and leaves a spicy taste in your mouth!" The show was a smashing success and ended the week on a spicy note.

The market is flooded with colourful bikinis, three pieces (with a detachable mini skirt), tankinis and two pieces with shorts. "We have more solid and fluorescent colours and both are doing well," says Himanshu Bhardawaj, General Manager, Marketing, Reebok India. The makings of a classic smooch

Wanna feel good? Just pucker up and plant a big fat kiss on someone you love. Apparently, nothing works better for your selfesteem than a good smackeroo.

A kiss signals our brain to produce oxytocin, a hormone that makes you feel good. But while doctors world-over powwow the benefits of kissing, photographers and filmmakers have already accepted what a kiss can do for you.

Just last month, the photograph of a couple kissing outside a Paris city hall was auctioned. Taken by Robert Doisneau in 1950, the seemingly spontaneous photo of Madame Bornet and her boyfriend Jacques Carteaud became a poster icon around the world.

Even movie kisses like Gone with the Wind and more recently Spiderman, have become iconic in a sense. But there's more to a kiss than meets the eye, say Bangalore's celebs. Every single one of the almost-kisses always thrill theatreperson Neeraj Chinappa.

"I love the kiss between Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis in Cape Fear too. It's one of the kisses where there's a lot of suspense and thrill. It's a dangerous kiss."

For a kiss to be classic or romantic, Neeraj believes there must be passion and "good lip action!" While these factors can make a kiss work, there are other reasons why a kiss fails... ..."These days I'm learning it's smoker's breath," says Neeraj, in jest.

A kiss should look genuine and believable, feels director VK Prakash. "Even in cinema, a kiss is the first move towards love," says Prakash, whose favourite kiss is the one in Kurudipunal between Gautami and Kamal Hasaan.

Actress Anu Prabhakar absolutely loves the kiss in Ghost. "It's the one where Demi Moore wants to kiss Patrick Swayze for the last time. Though it wasn't a sensational kiss, it was a beautiful one," she adds. When two people kiss in a film, it's the tenderness that stands out, says Anu.

"Although I'm an actress and I know exactly how kisses are done in films, I need to see the characters feel that kiss." And in reality, a kiss for Anu is about two minds connecting. "It's not just physical."

Did you know

Our brains have special neurons that help us locate each other's lips in the dark.

The average person will spend about 20,160 minutes kissing in their lifetime.

You burn 26 calories in a minute-long kiss.

Bust boom: all for that sexy look

Pamela Anderson did it, so did Madonna. Now, thanks to the recent re-approval of silicone breast implants by the FDA after a gap of 13 years, bust lines are set to get a lift. The FDA's new position on the use of silicone is important because this is the age of sexual imagery. As Mallika Sherawat says: "Men like talking to my breasts"

Fact is, the obsession with an ample bustline dates back to 1858, when Anne McLean of Williamsburg, NY, invented what may be the first patented American falsie - a cone-shaped wire device that intimidated her husband. Such preoccupation with female curves might have a purpose. "Women should look sexy and feminine. I like models with shapely bosoms walking the ramp," says Rohit Bal. "I know many models who have stuffed silicone in their breasts."

According to the Society of Plastic Surgeons, post-Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra, the number of women undergoing breast augmentation surgery is growing at an incredible pace.

In 1992, 32,607 women underwent the surgery, but by 2002, this number had jumped to 2.5 million. A 593 per cent jump in 10 years with 19-34 year-olds being responsible for 25 per cent of the procedures despite the whopping cost: USD 3,375. The US cashed in on USD 857 million for breast implants in 2003.

Is breast enhancement popular in India too? "Unlike in the UK and US, we don't maintain breast-implant registers. Breast augmentation is a taboo in India. Another deterrent is the cost. A breast implant can cost anything between Rs 35,000 and Rs 50,000," says Sunil Choudhary, a consultant with Max Health Care.

However, there are cosmetic surgeons like SB Gogia who have done more than 65 such jobs, because as he says, when it comes to the feminine mystique, nothing spells success like DD-cups.

"Most patients ask for a very large breast size," he clarifies. So, what exactly can silicone do for you? "The look and feel of silicone-studded breasts are so natural that you have to touch them to tell," says Bal. A cosmetic surgeon reveals: "We do import silicone implants. Even though they were banned in the US, they were used in the UK, Israel, New Zealand and Australia."

Neither the implants imported nor medical procedure involved are monitored in India. "We don't require any monitoring body as they are already certified by the authorities concerned in the countries of their origin," says Gogia.

Is it okay to have silicone assets? Psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh offers an explanation for this phenomenon: "Women who go for breast augmentation usually have low self esteem and confidence. They believe that their only appeal lies in their physical appearance. Relationship problems with the spouse are also a factor when it comes to feeling inadequate."

Paris Hilton gets waxed at Madame Tussauds!

WASHINGTON, May1: House of Wax star Paris Hilton is the latest celebrity to become a full sized waxwork at the Madame Tussauds museum chain. Her figure will be unveiled at The New York branch of the museum at a ceremony to be attended by the cast of the House of Wax before the release of the movie on May 6.

And though Paris is elated at the prospect of having the waxwork displayed at the world famous venue, she regrets the fact that due to her forgetfulness, her pet pooch Tinkerbell will not be cast aside her. "I didn't bring Tinkerbell to the thing. They wanted to make her too, but I forgot to take her to the thing where they take pictures of you," zap 2 it quoted her as saying.

Though Hilton has not yet seen her wax figure, she nevertheless seems to be extremely happy with the honour. "I think it's pretty cool," she added.

Priyanka -- Bold and Beautiful

NEW DELHI: She turned from model to actress and now Priyanka Chopra wants to become model actress. While Andaaz remains close to her heart, she admits she would think twice before exposing again. After the success of films like Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Aitraaz, the former Miss World is now looking to tone down her act.

"I am at a stage of my career where roles of substance matter more to me than when I started out. Andaaz was a relatively bold film in terms of my costumes but it's something I was very sure I wouldn't be doing again after I watched it on screen. Andaaz was and will always be very special to me, but I am no longer comfortable wearing those kind of clothes. On hindsight I realise Andaaz was a bold film, but I still don't know why I did it when I did. Perhaps I didn't fully realise the implications of what I was doing. After all I was just 18 when I shot for the film. Maybe I didn't know any better. But definitely it's not something I want to do again," she says.

The bare-dare days are over, insists Priyanka. According to her the audiences will get to see 'less' of her on screen: "I don't think I am going to expose anymore. What is the need? It is possible to wear trendy clothes and look sexy. As newcomers, most of us don't realise that people are forming an impression about you through the clothes you wear. For example in Andaaz, although Lara ends up getting the guy, I had a more varied role - it was a nice combination of comedy, sadness, sacrifice and lots of pranks. But it is a hot and sexy image that everyone recalls. Such a realisation can only come through experience. That is why actresses sometimes do things in the beginning of their career that they might repent later."

The Beauty from Bareilly is not afraid to buck the trend by covering up. "The so-called phase of bold cinema only lasted for a little while and it's now gone. People want to see films that are character and story oriented. The industry always has its ups and downs. There have been times when period films, war films and action films were popular by turns. Likewise sex too has come and gone. Today it is romantic films that rule the roost," she claims.

Priyanka's new coy andaaz seems to be as much in demand as her predisposition to sizzle earlier. There's certainly no dearth of offers. "After Waqt I'm looking forward to Barsaat and Yakeen. While in Waqt I play the spoilt kid of a rich father who wakes up to reality when she has to support her husband (Akshay Kumar) following a rift with his family, in Barsaat I am a small-town girl with a strong character. Yakeen again is a very different and performance-oriented role. Both films should release sometime in June," she says.

Priyanka is also ecstatic about her pairing with Hrithik in Rakesh Roshan's Krish. According to her: "Krish is turning out fabulously and I'm very happy with my character. People haven't seen me do anything like what I'm doing in Krish and that's really exciting for me. The film will release next year."

Despite the avalanche of high-profile appearances, the actress denies she's overly ambitious. "I don't think I have ever been ambitious. I would otherwise have planned my career far better. I have made my share of mistakes. Even though I have done some good films and some bad films, I do enjoy the art of filmmaking. Some films I do because they are good films; others to satisfy the actor inside me. But by and large I do films instinctively. There's no plan or method behind the choices that I make," she says.

Priyanka, who would have been an engineer if showbiz hadn't happened to her, describes herself as 'complicated but not complex.' She also rules out any complications beyond her on-screen chemistry with Akshay Kumar. "I need to stay away from all rumours at this stage of my career. Silence is the best option for any situation. I don't want any controversies in my life and I don't think I should be giving importance to non-issues by talking about them. One thing I am very clear about - I can handle almost anything except anyone messing with my family. I don't allow that," she says.

J Lo's book to focus on paparazzi

LONDON, April 24: With the paparazzi increasingly becoming a big problem for celebrities these days, pop singer Jennifer Lopez has decided to take the bull by the horns by writing a self-help book for celebs to deal with them. Lopez, who thinks that she is the perfect person to pen the book, said that it was strange that even though celebrities were fed up of the paparazzi, no one had thought of writing on the subject.

"Nobody likes to hear somebody in the public eye who they feel makes a lot of money, complain, so we don't, but it is a very strange thing nobody writes books about how to deal with that, so maybe I'll do that next, femalefirst quoted her as saying Moviehole.net.

Indian beauty crowned

For Niki D'Souza and Pawan Setpal it was a night of complete elation as they left 32 other contestants behind to grab the Gladrags Megamodel and Manhunt 2005 titles respectively. In fact 21-year-old Niki from Mumbai can't believe that she now wears the crown that glam gals like Lara Dutta, Aditi Govitrikar and Koena Mitra have worn in the past. "It was a wonderful experience. I got the best grooming that anyone can ask for, and now that I have actually won, it really feels like a dream fulfilled. I think I need to constantly pinch myself to realise that I have done it!" she quips.

Niki, who pipped First Runners up Kimasha Nanoo from South Africa and Second Runners up Neha Oberoi from Delhi to the title, feels she made her mark in beachwear. "Although the Introduction Round and Judges Round were the most crucial, I think I performed best in the Swimsuit Round," she says.

The new Gladrags Megamodel admits she was confident of a good showing in the contest. According to her: "Everybody's expectations were sky high. But honestly I don't suppose anybody was thinking about who would make it and who wouldn't. I am sure all the girls would have been confident of winning. That is why they were here in the first place. If you are nervous, you can't be faring too well. So yes, I was confident of making it to the final stage, but not about winning the title. I gave it my best shot in every round and just hoped that things would go well."

Although she has only just started to savour success as a model, Niki hints she may not be averse to giving up ramp for reel in the coming days. "I have already completed my graduation. I came to participate in the Gladrags contest only because I wanted to get into modelling full-time. So there's nothing else that I have in mind right now. I guess the logical thing for me to do after winning the title is to continue modelling and then take up films as and when the offers come my way," she says.

Niki is even willing to strip for success: "If a subject demands some exposure, then I would do it. But I certainly won't overexpose or strip if I don't see a reason for it."

Manhunt winner Pawan Setpal refuses to be modest about his achievement. "Yes I did expect to win because that is why I came here. All my hard work has paid off. I know that the body plays an important role in any modelling competition and have therefore been very conscientious about my eating habits and workouts in the gym. Although there are many people who helped me reach my goal, I take credit for hanging on and doing my best when things got rough. I am also grateful for the kind of grooming that Gladrags provided us," he adds.

According to Setpal, what separated him from First Runners up Aryan Baruah of Guwahati and Second Runners up Elvis Parkinson of Bangalore, was his mental toughness: "I didn't let the thought of losing enter my head even once. Once you let that happen, you might as well give up and go home. I came prepared to win - probably more than the others - and that is why I gave more than my best. I consider myself quite a disciplined person and remained focused throughout the contest. I gave my 100 per cent and maybe that helped. Although I agree with Mrs Wadia when she says that we are all winners, I can't help but think of myself as a little extra special!"

Satpal is just as candid about his future plans. "Modelling is very different from acting. If you win a pageant like this, then you are definitely recognised. Let's not fool anybody. People want to know who you are and they want to give you breaks. That is one reason I wanted to win this contest. I'm very passionate about acting and have said from day one in all my interviews that I love to act and want to be an actor. I love modelling too but then every model has a certain shelf life after which you start looking for younger and newer faces. On the other hand, there are no such compulsions in acting. If you are good, you can go on forever. I would therefore give myself a couple of years as a model and then prepare myself - like I always prepare myself for everything - to take the plunge as an actor," he claims.

But the 24-year-old perfectionist says he will bide his time. "I not good doing too many things at the same time. So I am just a model for now and would like to focus on my career in the fashion industry. I really wouldn't think any other way at this stage," he says.

Meanwhile Megamodel First Runners Up Kimasha has no regrets about losing the top spot to Niki. "Why should I be disappointed? As the first South African participant, I am proud of what I have achieved. I am a professional model and have done international assignments in the US and South Africa. During the contest we went through a grooming and make-up programme and also did charitable work so it was really interesting and a great experience. I took part in the Megamodel contest because I wanted to launch myself as a model in Mumbai. I already have some offers in hand and would love to do films if the opportunity arises," says the 27-year-old beauty who also has a degree in dentistry.

Neha, Megamodel Second Runners Up, too is satisfied with her performance. "Nikki certainly deserved to win and I am really happy for her."
A Jet Airways employee, Neha says she would be soon returning to Delhi to resume work. But Gladrags is an experience that she will cherish forever. "I've been in Mumbai for one month now where Mrs Wadia has been training us - the way we walk, talk, grooming, etiquette and everything - I'm really proud to be part of this contest because the way Mrs Wadia has trained us is excellent," she says.

Neha gets a pat on the back from her mother Rita Oberoi. According to her: "I don't think I'm sad because Neha failed to win the contest. I feel what she has achieved today is more than sufficient. It's a great feeling to see her here among the final three after days of auditions, selections and so much hard work. As far as I am concerned, all three girls are winners!"
Apart from all the glamour on stage, scintillating performances by MTV VJ S

phie Chowdhary, Crazy Cat Nandini and Niki and Niki made the evening really special. The Megamodel and Manhunt winners were chosen by a starry panel of judges that included Karan Johar, Gauri Khan, Farah Khan, Bipasha Basu, Mrs Nancy Mehta (Zubin Mehta's wife) Ektaa Kapoor, Vinita Bali (CEO Britannia), Maureen Wadia, Rohit Gupta from Sony TV and Bombay Dyeing MD Neenu Khanna.

Need a hooker? Pick one from the sex plaza!

BUDAPEST, April 13: The Hungarian Interior Ministry looks set to allow prostitutes to tout for business in shopping malls, local media reported on Tuesday. The ministry is thinking of allowing dedicated shopping centers where prostitutes could strike deals for sex as long as they move to a place of their own to carry out the transaction, the daily Nepszabadsag said.

"There is nothing intrinsically wrong legally with an entertainment center without gratification," the newspaper quoted from a letter the ministry sent to the businessman who proposed to set up an "all-in-one" sex plaza. Hungary allows local governments to set so-called "zones of patience" for the country's up to 20,000 prostitutes, but no municipality has done so yet

A bra for every occasion?

An underwear maker on Friday celebrated the birth of Japan's first new professional baseball team in 50 years with a commemorative bra shaped like baseballs and features team mascots both inside and out. The bra is made of synthetic leather and has dolls of the expansion team Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles' furry mascots "Clutch" and female "Clucchina" clutching the side of each bra cup turned baseball.

Completing the theme, the inside of the bra is trimmed with a real eagle's feather, underwear maker Triumph said. The single commemorative bra will be sold by an internet auction closing Wednesday, a day ahead of the team's home debut in the northern city of Sendai.

"We would like the lucky individual who bids down this single set edition ... to wear the bra and support the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles at their opening game in Sendai," a Triumph statement said.

The Golden Eagles were formed after the merger of two money-losing teams in Japanese baseball. The national sport is in crisis due to soaring salaries and in September the first strike by players. Nippon Professional Baseball chose as the new team's owner Internet shopping site Rakuten, which will join the old boys club of Japanese pro baseball dominated by railway firms, media conglomerates and food companies.

In the photo Japan's lingerie maker Triumph International Japan campaign girl Yu Misaki displays the 'Rakuten Eagles Bra' to cheer newly joined professional baseball team Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles as the first newly created team in half a century in Japanese baseball league.

Indian actress ready to go topless

NEW DELHI, March 23: Undeterred by the fact that the Censor Board is refusing to clear Deepak Tijori's Khamosh until shots of her bare back are removed, Rakhi Sawant says it would better watch out when she decides to turn around. "I think my back made the censors feel uneasy. There's a bathing sequence in the film where I am shown wearing nothing but a transparent, red colour underwear. I am looking hot in this scene. Since Khamosh is a suspense thriller, exposure is an integral part of the film," insists Sawant.

The 'Mirchi' girl brushes aside any competition from Shilpa Shetty and Juhi Chawla, her co-stars in Khamosh. According to her: "My back will outshine everything else. It's so sexy that the audience will find it difficult to let their attention wander. Deepak (Tijori) had explained the role to me and I knew exactly what I had to do."

However Sawant admits the 'wardrobe malfunction' wasn't intended. "When Deepak showed me the red underwear in which I was going to take a shower, it didn't appear flimsy at all. But once it got wet, it just went transparent. Although I was surprised when I saw the rushes, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Today actresses are exposing their front, but I am ready to compete with my back," she quips.

The Bollywood siren, who also sizzled in the Pardesiya remix, claims Indian censorship laws are too restrictive to allow her to go topless. "When the censors have a problem with my back, imagine what will happen if I expose from the front. It will drive them mad. I have a good body and in case there's an offer from Hollywood, I wouldn't mind going topless. But that's simply not possible here," she says.

Rakhi has no complaints against her director. In fact she's delighted with whatever she's done in Khamosh. "I love exposing. Khamosh is just the kind of film that interests me. I have no intention of losing my sex symbol tag in Bollywood," she exults.

Fonda forced to arrange orgies

LOS ANGELES: Veteran screen goddess Jane Fonda's late husband Roger Vadim bullied her into seducing women to join them in orgies, the Internet Media Database reports. The 67-year-old says in her autobiography My Life So Far due in April that Vadim, who directed her in Barbarella , forced her to phone escort companies and chat up girls in bars so they could take part in his "cruel and misogynistic" sex sessions.

"It seems shocking that I did that, but I convinced myself that it was fine, even though it was killing my heart," she writes. Fonda, whose six-year marriage to Vadim ended in 1973, has never previously admitted to the group sex sessions she was forced to participate in.

Locking 'Lips' in front of wife

Although Nescafe girl Maushmi Udeshi was steaming hot when she locked 'Lips' with Anuj Saxena in Sameer Malkan's film, it didn't quite bring the actor's wife to boil. But Maushmi admits it was awkward having the missus around during love scenes. "I realised how difficult it was for a wife to see her husband romance another woman on screen. Anuj Saxena (of television serial Kusum fame), my co-star in Lips, was accompanied by his wife on the shooting locations. I found her to be very inquisitive about what went on between me and Anuj when the romantic moments in the film were shot," she says.

According to Maushmi, Mrs Saxena's thoughts would not have been all charitable. "Judging from her facial expressions, I am sure she was thinking - I want to kill this woman. Maybe she even regretted marrying an actor in the first place!" quips the 5'7" of pure oomph.

The model, who was the much-talked about ghost in Bally Sagoo's Noorie and also dazzled in Nitin Bali's music video Neele Neele Ambar Pe, insists working in her debut film was an educative experience. "For all practical purposes, I learnt the art of kissing! I never knew that when I kiss someone in real life, I start blinking. The same thing happened while I was doing the kissing scenes with Anuj. Since the director wanted me to either close my eyes or keep them open, I had to do several takes to get it right. Finally I was able to deliver the kind of performance that my director had been expecting from me," she says.

Directed by Malkan who has hits like Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Divya Shakti to his credit and produced by US-based S. Khimani, Lips is shot entirely on locations in New York and Pennsylvania. The story revolves around the escapades of an illegal Indian migrant who develops a massive crush for the enigmatic young wife of a middle-aged millionaire. On the run from the immigration authorities and without an escape route in sight, the male protagonist discovers love and longing - and, more crucially, a way out of his predicament - in the seductive charms of the woman.

Confident that she has a stunning figure and looks to match, Maushmi finds nothing wrong in exposing on screen, provided she's offered a great script. According to her: "I am not in favour of unnecessary exposure. At present you have two kind of actresses - one, who have no problems in stripping down for films that have a strong sexual content and second, women like Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee who have so much grace even when they are doing romantic scenes. I don't want to be bracketed with actresses in the first category that I mentioned. I have received dozens of such offers but have refused them all."

Despite the fact that it hinges on an extra-marital affair and a cold-blooded murder, Lips isn't just another film with a 'bold' theme, claims Maushmi. "Sex is not the main thrust. It's an emotional, romantic thriller. I have my glamorous pictures from the film circulating in the media because glamour is an important ingredient in Lips. However I am in love with only one person throughout the film," she says.

After having successfully campaigned for brand leaders like Nescafe, Kit Kat, Aristocrat Whisky, Taj Hotels, Bakemans and NIIT, Maushmi is now looking forward to take Bollywood by storm. "I delayed my entry into films because I wanted to launch my career with a big name director. Luckily for me, a noted filmmaker like Sameer Malkan decided to give me a break. Not only does Lips have a great story line, I am also very happy with the way the film has been treated," she says.

Naomi nets Samba sex symbol

LONDON: Fiery supermodel, Naomi Campbell, may have found her 'Mr Right' in the Brazilian actor, Sergio Marone, who is 10 years younger to her. The duo have been reportedly dating since one month, after they met in the last month's Rio carnival, and are getting on well with each other despite the glaring differences in age and language.

"It's early days but they've been getting on brilliantly. They enjoyed a very intimate lunch together at the posh Porcao steakhouse in Ipanema," the Mirror quoted one of the sources as saying. "They've been on a few dates now and Naomi seems really keen. We just hope the language barrier won't prove too much of a problem," the source added.

"Sergio's a real catch. In Brazil he's a sex symbol and has loads of girls after him," the Mirror quoted one of the sources as saying. "He's a real laid-back guy and has a very different temperament to Naomi. "Obviously opposites attract," the source added.

Naomi has previously dated movie legend Robert De Niro, U2 bassist Adam Clayton and was widely expected to wed Formula One boss Flavio Briatore after a three year on-off romance.

Madhuri Dixit is mom again!

Houston: Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit-Nene has given birth to a baby boy, at a hospital in Denver, Colorado, sources said. The baby, born on March 8, is the second boy for the "Dhak Dhak girl," who always prefered to have a girl the second time she gave birth.

Her first son, Arin is two-years-old now. Arin too was born around the time of 'Holi' festival in March, two years ago. Madhuri is ecstatic about being a mom again. As per reports, she and the baby are doing great.

Anthony paints nude Lopez

LOS ANGELES, March 11: Jennifer Lopez's singer husband Marc Anthony has painted the superstar in the nude, according to a report. The Wedding Planner star is reportedly delighted with the oil painting, which "depicts Jennifer from her backside", reports the Internet Media Database.

"JLo was so flattered by the beautiful portrait Marc painted of her that she hung it in her dressing room at home. It's very artistic and tasteful," a friend was quoted as saying.

I didn't count kisses, says Payal Rohatgi

32 Kisses or misses? Payal Rohatgi isn't telling. While a section of the press says she has outsmooched Mallika Sherawat in Laila-A Mystery, the actress herself claims she wasn't counting. Payal, who is doing Laila with TLV Prasad after MaazaMaaza, admits she's surprised at being dragged into the numbers game. According to her: "I don't know who was there on the sets to keep a count of how many times I kissed. I never talked about any kind of figure. I can only say that there are some explicit scenes in the film."

The former supermodel insists she has no idea about the kiss count. "I just don't know. It wasn't as if I was counting - one...two...three...four, and so on. In a film where I am acting, do you seriously think I would have the time to keep track of the number of times I kiss my co-star? I am sure somebody has been spreading rumours. I certainly won't deny that Laila has such scenes, but if you ask me for a number, there's no way I can be as precise as the person who actually counted my kisses," she quips.

Payal however makes no secret of Laila's explicit content. "The film is about a beautiful woman, the character that I play. She cons different people in several different ways. In the film we intend to show how men act dumb and lose all powers of reasoning when they come face-to-face with a good-looking woman. For example, there's one scene where I get all romantic in order to dupe a minister. I have to expose here so that I can attract him. Similarly I use other tricks in other situations. Laila is very interesting and like Ram Gopal Varma's Darna Mana Hai, it is episodic in nature," she says.

Payal, the sexed-up teacher from Tauba Tauba, believes it is not just ministers who are susceptible to the wiles of a comely woman. "No matter what their profession, there's a certain category of men who let passion overcome reason as soon as a girl offers them her company. More often than not, they turn out to be losers," she declares.
