Parsons # 1 Art and Design School in US; # 2 in the World

By Deepak Arora

Parsons President David E. Van ZandtNEW YORK, May 1: Parsons The New School for Design has been named the number one art and design school in the United States by Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, a London-based global provider of specialist higher education and careers information and solutions, according to Parsons' President David E. Van Zandt.

Parsons was also named number two in the world in the same category.

“We are honored by this recognition. During the past decade Parsons has been able to make major developments in our curriculum, launch innovative new graduate programs, and advance research and scholarship in art and design,” said Parsons School of Design Executive Dean Joel Towers.

Executive Dean Joel Towers“This work is built on our extraordinary faculty and our integration with the New School enabling deep cross disciplinary collaboration among design, the humanities, and social research.”

This is the first year QS has listed the world’s top art and design schools. Their rankings highlight the world’s top universities in 36 individual subjects, based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact.

The results are informed by the expert opinion of 85,062 academics and 41,910 employers, alongside the analysis of 17.3 million research papers and over 100 million citations.

“The ranking shows that academic excellence is widely distributed around the globe,” QS Head of Research Ben Sowter said in a statement. “The 894 universities ranked are based in 60 different countries.”

In the first edition of this international art school ranking, the top spot goes to the UK’s Royal College of Art, followed by the US’s Parsons The New School for Design and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). While the top 10 is dominated by art schools from these two countries, beyond this the picture becomes much more diverse, with the ranking serving to highlight leading art and design departments across the globe.

The US accounts for 27 of the 100 top art schools featured, followed by the UK with 12 and Australia with 10. Canada, China and New Zealand each have four representatives, while Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Singapore and Sweden each feature three times. A total of 27 countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas have at least one leading art and design school included.

Continental Europe’s leading representative is Italy’s Politecnico di Milano (11th), closely followed by Finland’s Aalto University (14th) and the Netherlands’ Design Academy Eindhoven (19th). The leading Asian positions are claimed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (24th), followed by China’s Tsinghua University (26th) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (28th). Australia makes its debut appearance with RMIT University (20th), five places ahead of the University of New South Wales (25th). There’s also a strong performance from leading art schools in the Latin American region, led by Mexico’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (22=) and Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (29th).

What insecure people post on Facebook

NEW YORK, May 29: If friends brag about the sweet gestures of their partners on Facebook, they might be inadvertently sharing a thing or two about their personalities at the same time.

Researchers at Brunel University London reviewed the status updates of 555 Facebook users who completed surveys about self-esteem, narcissism, and the "Big Five" personality traits: extroversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, they found those with different personality traits chose to share very different information. Extroverts, for example, frequently wrote about social events and tended to use Facebook exclusively to socialize, the Independent reports. Conscientious people often wrote about their children, while people with open personalities didn't shy away from sharing political views or social itinerary. People with low self-esteem, meanwhile, frequently posted about their romantic partners.

"People are more likely to post relationship-relevant information on Facebook on days when they feel insecure," researchers say, adding it's "reasonable" to see the move as a way to "claim" their relationship.

However, those with low self-esteem didn't aim for attention and validation so much as narcissists, who were found to share updates about their achievements, as well as their diet and fitness routine, which suggests a deliberate display of the energy put into their appearance.

Researchers say narcissists also posted more and received more likes and comments than others, but "it could be that their Facebook friends politely offer support while secretly disliking such egotistical displays," the researchers say in a press release.

"Greater awareness of how one's status updates might be perceived by friends could help people to avoid topics that annoy more than they entertain." And, as the study was self-reported, narcissists may have inflated the number of likes and comments they received, per Business Insider. (Facebook could be hurting your memory.)
