Meghalaya’s Mawlynnong is the cleanest village in Asia

SHILLONG, Dec 28:

Much before Prime Minister Narendra Modi began Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a remote village in Meghalaya called Mawlynnong, had earned the reputation of being the cleanest village in Asia.

The title ‘cleanest village in Asia’ was given by Discover India Magazine in 2005 and reinforced by the BBC, UNESCO and National Geographic, says Conde Nast Traveller.

People of Meghalaya's Khasi tribe have placed eco-friendly bamboo dustbins besides roads.

According to a report in BBC, all the residents of the village can read and write and each house has a toilet.

Rubbish is thrown into a pit dug near the village where it is left to turn into compost and plastic bags are banned, says BBC.

Arecanut is the main produce of Mawlynnong.

Arecanut is highly susceptible to disease and sensitive to dirt, so the locals have to keep themselves and their surroundings clean.

This fact could have contributed to the village’s sense of cleanliness and hygiene.

There are many living root bridges near Mawlynnong in Meghalaya.

The ancient root bridges spanning the rivers of the remote northeast are some of India’s most iconic images, symbolising a slower pace of life unimaginable in its bustling megacities.

But a spate of infrastructure projects designed to improve access to the rest of India and its neighbours is serving as a wake-up call to what has long been a sleepy backwater.

By Deepak Arora

Ashwani KhuranaGURGAON:

On a beautiful winter afternoon, Karma Lakelands was brimming with enthusiastic children along with their golfer parents. The occasion was to celebrate the launch of a Children Park for the little ones and an outdoor gym.

The Children Park also brought smile and cheers on the golfing fathers and/or mothers as they could now play a game of golf more peacefully without worrying about the kids, who have now found a fun and playing place of their own.

This has been possible thanks to the untiring creativity and leadership qualities of Ashwani Khurana, the man behind Karma Lakelands. Ashwani is the Konscience and Konservator of Karma Lakelands.

He believes “real dreams are not those that happen while you are sleep but are those that don’t let you sleep”.

What a beautiful thought by the CEO of the company. What is best about him is that he continues to nurture and augment Karma Lakelands.

It is for this reason that Karma Golf Course has today become of the most popular golf course in the Delhi NCR.

In line with the ambience, the outdoor gym caters to those who do not want to be confined to traditional indoor gyms or to parents who want to keep fit while watching their children play. These are just a few perks that the space has to offer.

The unique 9-hole boutique golf course has been carefully designed by the Melbourne based Pacific Coast.

Comprising both resident and visiting members, the golf course has its own community of ardent players who enjoy playing in the pristine green and expansive environs of Karma Lakelands.

Karma is the only project of its kind in the Delhi NRC region. With tree top level development, the entire campus is a “No Horn Zone”.

Ashwani Khurana says: “All rain water is harvested here and we have also created an area for bio composting of all kitchen and green waste. Furthermore, our organic, agro and bee farming initiatives bring you closer to nature.”

It is home to a lively community which shares a collective vision of mutual co-existence, drawing energy and inspiration from the facilities available at the campus.

The well-tended gardens provide for a soul searching experience while taking a walk around the campus. There is a rich diversity of flora and fauna that provides an ever-changing palette of natural beauty through the seasons.

The unbound green expanse is covered by groves of trees, grasslands, water bodies and beautiful gardens thriving with flora and bird life.

Amidst such natural surroundings, you fill find spacious villas which are classic and contemporary designed, a 9-hole golf course, a driving range and right at the figurative centre, the heart of Karma Lakelands- Klub Karma.

Karma Lakelands is an ecological gated community dedicated at providing its residents a reconnect with nature, which has been lost as rapid urbanization progressed.

Karma Lakelands stands on the forefront of environmental and sustainable innovation, shining a guiding light to future real estate development. At Karma Lakelands, one embraces nature in its full glory, realizing what the word ‘luxury’ truly signifies.

Karma Lakelands is not limited just to its individual components of villas or the Klub but in reality, it is an experience. An experience that gets you closer to what is nature’s true intention - harmony.

The extensive, consolidated area, dense plant cover, open spaces, waterbodies, the use of organic and natural solutions both for pest control and enriching the soil, ensures a wholesome environment while also creating a milder micro-climate.

Cleanliness of soul along with clean towns and villages will make India a nation on the go: Sunil Kanoria

By Deepak Arora

Sunil KanoriaNEW DELHI, Dec 3: ASSOCHAM is teaming up with Srei Foundation and Times Foundation to launch 'Spirituality @ Work’ for corporate India and global enterprises, an initiative which will lead them to profitable way of doing business in a sustainable manner as their leaders and workforce go about cleaning their soul under the ‘Sach Bharat’ campaign just as ‘Swachch Bharat’ focuses on cleaning up towns and villages.

These three organisations today unveiled the theme of 'Spirituality @ Work' for 'Sach Bharat Confluence and Samman' to be organised on December 22 and 23, 2015 at New Delhi.

"Just as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is about cleanliness of our towns and villages, Sach Bharat is about cleanliness of the soul. Spirituality is not about religious beliefs, but universal truths about what is good for humanity. Through this confluence and samman, I believe corporate India and global enterprises will adopt spirituality in their business conduct. The spiritual way can also be a sustainably profitable way – this is the core message that we want to share with everyone through the idea of Sach Bharat," said Sunil Kanoria, ASSOCHAM President and Vice Chairman, Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited.

He agreed with a suggestion from the media that cleaning up the thoughts and mind is required as much as sanitation around us in the present milieu so that India stands up as a nation of enlightened citizens marching towards an economic uplift.

'Sach Bharat' is first of its kind conglomeration where all streams of thought converge for a great cause. The Sach Bharat Confluence and Samman will bring together international luminaries from diverse cross-sections of the society. Together with government representatives, heads of state, industry leaders and spiritual leaders, discussions will focus around the need for governments, citizens and corporate entities to imbibe spirituality in every aspect of life and business conduct.

Spirituality is and has been at the core that unifies Indians into one of the most vibrant societies in the world. In today's world, spirituality devoid of religious beliefs or customs has the potential to bring together diverse societies to advance humanity. This has been the endeavour of Srei Foundation, which has been organising the 'World Confluence of Humanity, Power and Spirituality' for the past six years.

"Spirituality is not a mere esoteric philosophical notion. It is a concrete set of 'to do' and 'not to do' elements that defines societies and businesses."

Smt. Indu Jain, Chairman, Times Foundation, adds "Spirituality has the power to unlock tremendous human potential over time. Alongside, spirituality bestows the ability to handle change wisely and smile through both springs and storms.

Dr. H.P. Kanoria, Chairman, Srei Foundation, says, "Spirituality manifests divinity within us. It ignites us to work with devotion and righteousness to serve humanity."
