Tripura boy killed in racial attack in Dehradun; They called him 'Chinese and momo'
DEHRADUN, Dec 29: Anjel Chakma was one of the first students in his final-year MBA batch to be placed at a private company. A football enthusiast and one of the brightest in his class, he hoped to graduate with flying colours and begin work at the French MNC — an accomplishment that would have meant the world to a family that took an education loan to send him to Uttarakhand.
On December 9, when the 24-year-old was out in Dehradun with his younger brother Michael (21), a group of six, including two juveniles, picked up a fight that escalated into a racial attack, which allegedly saw the brothers being called “Chinese” and “momo”. Five men have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while one is absconding.
Kwthar Debbarma, the secretary of the Uttarakhand Tripura Students’ Association and one of the students who closely assisted Chakma’s family at the hospital, said “They started arguing, and when the boys responded, they called them names like ‘momo’ and ‘Chinese’. Chakma told them they are from Tripura and are Indian, but the group continued to taunt them. The two decided to leave — Anjel had even started his motorcycle — but the men hit Michael on the head. Anjel got down and resisted the attack, but the accused had a knife and stabbed him,” Debbarma said.
The complaint, based on which an FIR has been registered, also recorded Michael as saying that the accused called them racist slurs before attacking them. “Chakma was operated on, and it seemed like he would survive, but his health deteriorated, and he had to be placed on ventilator support,” Debbarma said. He died 17 days after the attack, on December 26.
According to senior sub-inspector Jitender Kumar, Yagya Raj Awasthi, who belongs to Nepal, is on the run, and two teams have been dispatched to arrest him.
Although the complaint was filed on December 10, a day after the attack, an FIR was registered on December 12, and arrests were made on December 14 — a delay the family has now highlighted.
After Anjel Chakma was hospitalised, he was responding well to the treatment, said the vice-chancellor of Jigyasa University, Dr Shankar Ramamoorthy. “We visited him, and he told me that he was apprehensive about missing his exams. He even told me that he has high bone density and will get well in no time. All of us held out that hope,” he said. The VC said he met with the youth’s father, who, too, was worried about his third-semester exams. “The thought that he would slip into this condition never occurred to us,” Dr Ramamoorthy said.
No son should die this way: Tripura student's father, a BSF jawan, seeks justice
DEHRADUN, Dec 29: The grieving father of Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who died after an alleged racist attack in Dehradun, has made an emotional appeal for justice, saying no parent should have to lose a child in this manner. Tarun Prasad Chakma, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, said that the accused deserve capital punishment.
“My child is gone. This should not happen to anyone else,” he said. “We are devastated. Our only request is that no other child should die like this.”
Tarun Chakma said such an incident had never occurred before. “This has never happened earlier; this is the first such incident,” he said, alleging that local residents were involved in the attack. “It was the local people there who did this.”
Demanding the strictest punishment for those responsible, he said, “I want justice. If my child had survived, I would have forgiven the accused. But now, all of them should be given the death penalty. They should be hanged.”
He also strongly condemned racial abuse, saying it was unacceptable in a diverse country like India. “Children from every corner of India live across the country. Such things should not happen,” he said. “This issue of racial comments is completely wrong. It should never happen to anyone.”
Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura’s Unakoti district, was attacked on December 9 in Dehradun after he objected to racial slurs allegedly hurled at his younger brother, Michael Chakma. According to police and family accounts, the attackers allegedly used racist remarks, including calling the brothers “Chinese”.
Anjel was rushed in a critical condition to Graphic Era Hospital, where he battled for life for 17 days before succumbing to his injuries.
Following his death, anger has spread among students from the Northeast, with several student organisations staging candlelight marches and protests demanding justice. Northeast student groups say the incident reflects a deeper problem of racial abuse faced by people from the region across the country.
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes wrote to the Uttarakhand Director General of Police on December 23, alleging police negligence in the case. After the commission’s intervention, police added murder charges to the FIR.
Police have arrested Suraj Khwas (22), who was from Manipur, Avinash Negi (25), Sumit (25) and two juveniles have been detained for the incident, while another accused has likely fled to Nepal, his native country. A reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has condemned the racial abuse, saying, "Racism must never be normalised and those responsible must be punished."
As protests continue in Dehradun, Tripura and other parts of the country, Anjel Chakma’s father said his fight is no longer just for his son, but for every student who leaves home to study. “I have lost my child,” he said. “Now, he must get justice.”
Ex MLA Kuldeep Sengar To Stay In Jail, Supreme Court Stays Bail In Unnao Case
NEW DELHI, Dec 29: The Supreme Court has stayed a Delhi High Court order suspending ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar's life term for the rape of a woman – then a minor – in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao in 2017.
The court acknowledged a responsibility to the survivor and issued notice to the ex-Bharatiya Janata Party leader based on a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation – the lead investigating and prosecution agency – challenging the High Court order. Sengar was given four weeks to respond.
The court noted drily that there is no question of compromise personal liberty; Kuldeep Sengar remains in jail for now, serving a concurrent sentence over the custodial death of the woman's father.
A vacation bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and including Justices JK Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih also allowed the Unnao rape survivor to intervene with her petition.
Ahead of today's hearing the survivor said she had faith in the Supreme Court and appealed to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure the safety of her family and herself.
She claimed Sengar had bribed officials, including the Investigating Officer and an unnamed Delhi High Court judge, and said her family had already suffered severely since Sengar was given bail.
The 2017 Unnao rape case made headlines this week after Sengar – then representing the Bangarmau seat – had his sentence suspended and was granted bail pending an appeal against the trial court's verdict. In a controversial order, the High Court reasoned his MLA status did not justify the lower court considering him a 'public servant'. The bench of Justice Subramonium Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan also said anti-child sexual offences law POCSO could not be applied in this case.
And, having dismissed Sengar as a 'public servant', the High Court said the seven-and-a-half years served so far is "more than minimum number" prescribed by law in this case.
Supreme Court Keeps In Abeyance Its Aravalli Hills Judgment, To Set Up Fresh Expert Committee
NEW DELHI, Dec 29: In a suo motu case initiated over concerns surrounding revised definition of Aravalli Hills, the Supreme Court on Monday (December 29) has kept in abeyance its earlier directions concerning the change in definition of Aravalli Hills, after expressing concern that the expert committee report and the Court's observations were being misconstrued.
A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice AG Masih said further clarification was required before the report or the Court's directions could be implemented, and issued notice on the suo motu case returnable on 21st January.
"We deem it necessary that Committee recommendation and directions of this Court be kept in abeyance. Stay to remain in effect till constitution of the Committee", the Court stated.
It may be recalled that the suo motu case was initiated following concerns that the recent change in the definition of Aravalli Hills could open doors to unregulated mining and environmental damage.
The Court said that prior to implementation, a fair, impartial and independent expert opinion must be considered to provide definitive guidance. It noted the need to examine whether the definition of the Aravalli Hills and Ranges had created a structural paradox, and whether it had inversely broadened the scope of non-Aravalli areas, thereby facilitating the continuation of unregulated mining.
The Bench also flagged specific concerns requiring examination, including whether regulated mining would be permitted in the 500-metre gaps between hills, and if so, what precise structural parameters would be used to ensure that ecological continuity was not compromised. The Court said it must be determined whether the concern that only 1,048 hills out of 12,081 meet the 100-metre elevation threshold was factually and scientifically correct, and whether a geological enquiry was necessary.
Chief Justice Surya Kant said the Court proposed to constitute a high-powered expert committee to holistically assess the report and examine these questions. The proposed exercise would also include a detailed identification of territories that would be excluded from the Aravalli area, and an assessment of whether such exclusion could risk degradation and compromise the ecological integrity of the Aravalli range.
The Court issued notice in the matter and requested the Attorney General for India R Venkataramani and Senior Advocate PS Parmeswar to assist the Court, including on the composition of the proposed committee.
During the hearing, the Solicitor General also informed the Court that notices had been issued to the States directing that no further mining activity be carried out.
The Court took suo motu cognizance after public protests and concerns raised by environmental groups and civil society organizations over the revised definition of the Aravalli Hills, a region known for its ecological importance, including its role in preventing desertification and sustaining groundwater levels. It was apprehended that dilution of the definition could legitimize mining and construction activities in areas that were earlier treated as protected.
The issue arose due to differing definitions of the Aravalli Hills and Aravalli Ranges across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat, which had resulted in regulatory gaps and instances of illegal mining. To address these inconsistencies, the Supreme Court had earlier constituted a high-level committee.
In a judgment delivered in November this year, the Court accepted the operational definition recommended by a committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the context of mining.
As per the accepted definition, “Aravalli Hills” refers to any landform in designated districts with a minimum elevation of 100 metres from the local relief, including supporting slopes and connected landforms. An “Aravalli Range” is formed when two or more such hills are located within 500 metres of each other.
While accepting the definition, the Court had also directed the Union Government to prepare a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining before permitting any new mining activity in the ecologically sensitive Aravalli region.
Supreme Court special bench to hear suo motu case on ‘definition’ of Aravalli
NEW DELHI, Dec 27: Amid concerns over the recent redefinition of the Aravalli Hills, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter on Saturday and decided to hear it on Monday.
A three-judge Special Vacation Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will hear the matter.
In a judgment in November, the Apex Court accepted the recommendations of a committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, defining the ‘Aravalli Hills’ as any landform with an elevation of 100 metres or more above the local relief and an ‘Aravalli Range’ as a collection of two or more such hills within 500 metres from each other.
“Any landform located in the Aravalli districts, having an elevation of 100 metres or more from the local relief, shall be termed as Aravalli Hills... The entire landform lying within the area enclosed by such lowest contour, whether actual or extended notionally, together with the hill, its supporting slopes and associated landforms irrespective of their gradient, shall be deemed to constitute part of the Aravalli Hills,” the court had agreed with the Ministry panel.
The panel had also defined the Aravali Range, saying, “Two or more Aravalli Hills, located within a proximity of 500 metres from each other, measured from the outermost point on the boundary of the lowest contour line on either side, shall constitute the Aravalli Range”.
The court had also accepted the recommendations for sustainable mining and the steps to be taken to prevent illegal mining in Aravalli Hills and Ranges.
It had directed the authorities to identify permissible areas for “mining and ecologically sensitive, conservation-critical and restoration priority areas within the Aravalli landscape where mining shall be strictly prohibited or permitted only under exceptional and scientifically justified circumstances”.
“We further direct that till the MPSM (Management Plan for Sustainable Mining) is finalised by the MoEF&CC through ICFRE (Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education), no new mining leases should be granted,” it had directed.
The Apex Court had agreed with the Ministry panel’s recommendations despite recognising the Aravallis as a “green barrier” that prevents the eastward spread of the Thar desert.
Congress Leader, Activist Detained During Protest Against Bail In Unnao Case
NEW DELHI, Dec 27: Several protesters, including activist Yogita Bhayana and Congress leader Mumtaz Patel, were detained during a sit-in near Parliament against the bail granted to Unnao rape convict and expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Sengar.
Bhayana, Patel, and some other protesters congregated near the Parliament complex around 4 pm on Saturday and began shouting slogans, demanding that the court order be revoked. On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court had suspended the sentence of the former MLA, who was convicted of raping a 17-year-old girl in 2017.
The police announced that the area near the Parliament was not a designated place for protests and asked them to leave, and detained them when they refused.
Bhayana and Patel said the protests were necessary to draw attention to a very important issue.
"This is not just the story of the Unnao rape survivor. Things are now beyond tolerance. New cases keep coming up. Powerful people are involved in rape and people in positions of power are implicated. In the Unnao case, our protest activated the CBI (to appeal against the Delhi high court order in the Supreme Court), and now the Ankita Bhandari case is coming up," Bhayana said.
The activist was referring to the murder of a receptionist at the Vanantra resort in Rishikesh, who was also being coerced into sex acts. One of the convicts in the murder is the son of a BJP leader.
Patel accused the government of not acting against people connected to the BJP.
"The government talks about women's empowerment, but daughters suffer atrocities and are left to wander helplessly. People connected with the BJP do such things because they have the government's support," she alleged.
On Saturday, the survivor also accused the CBI of not standing by her as she fought a legal battle.
"Had the CBI stood with my lawyer, we wouldn't have had to see this day. We would have won, and they would have lost... Their (Sengar's) family is bursting crackers. But ask my family. My father was killed. My husband and I were fired from our jobs. What will we eat? Where do we go? I have two newborns," she was quoted as saying.
On Wednesday, the survivor's mother was also allegedly forced to jump off a moving bus after she and her daughter were stopped from addressing the media.
Sengar's sentence was suspended by the high court till the pendency of his appeal challenging his 2019 conviction in the rape case. The court also directed Sengar not to come within a 5-km radius of the victim's house and not threaten her or her mother.
Unnao rape case: Protest outside Delhi HC against suspension of Sengar's jail term
NEW DELHI, Dec 26: A number of protesters, including women activists along with the Unnao rape survivor's mother, demonstrated outside the Delhi High Court on Friday, days after the sentence of Kuldeep Sengar, a former BJP MLA who was convicted in the case, was suspended.
The protesters, holding placards, raised slogans such as “Balatkariyo ko sanrakshan dena band kro” (stop protecting rapists) in support of the Unnao rape survivor.
Women activists from the All India Democratic Women's Association participated in the protest along with activist Yogita Bhayana and the survivor's mother.
The survivor’s mother said she had come to the high court to protest as her daughter had endured immense suffering.
“I am not blaming the entire high court, but only the two judges whose decision has shattered our trust,” she said.
The mother added that earlier judges had delivered justice to the family, but the accused had now been granted bail.
“This is an injustice towards our family. We will approach the Supreme Court, as I have faith in it,” she said.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered the release of Sengar, who is serving a life term in the case, on bail pending the disposal of his appeal against his conviction by a trial court in December 2019.
In its order, the court directed that the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA shall not come within a five-kilometre radius of the victim’s residence or threaten the rape survivor or her mother, and said any violation of the conditions would automatically lead to the cancellation of his bail.
However, Sengar will remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in connection with the custodial death of the survivor's father and has not been granted bail in that case.
Unnao rape case: Plea filed in Supreme Court against suspension of Sengar's jail term
NEW DELHI, Dec 25: A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court order suspending the jail term of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case.
The petition filed by advocates Anjale Patel and Pooja Shilpkar has sought a stay on the High Court order.
They contended that the High Court passed the order without considering that the trial court observed that Sengar must remain in jail for the rest of his natural life.
The High Court has committed a grave error in law as well as on facts in granting bail/suspension of sentence to Sengar despite his serious criminal antecedents and his established involvement in the heinous offences of rape, they said.
"The High Court failed to appreciate the material evidence relied upon by the prosecution which clearly demonstrates the barbarity and brutality of the accused, coupled with his demonstrated muscle power, financial influence and criminal propensity, as evidenced from the fact that even while the victim's father was under judicial custody, the accused orchestrated and executed victim's father murder to silence the family and frustrate the due course of justice," the plea said.
On December 23, the High Court suspended the jail term of Sengar, who is serving life imprisonment in the Unnao rape case, saying he has already served seven years and five months in prison.
Sengar's sentence has been suspended by the High Court till the pendency of his appeal challenging his conviction and sentence in the rape case. He has challenged a December 2019 trial court verdict in the case.
He will, however, remain in jail since he is also serving 10 years' imprisonment in the custodial death case of the victim's father and has not been granted bail in that case.
Imposing several conditions, the High Court directed Sengar, who kidnapped and raped the survivor when she was a minor, to furnish a personal bond of ₹15 lakh with three sureties of the like amount.
It also directed him not to come within a 5-km radius of the survivor's residence in Delhi and not to threaten her or her mother. Violation of any of the conditions would lead to the cancellation of bail, the High Court said.
The rape case and other connected cases were transferred to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh on the directions of the Supreme Court on August 1, 2019.
Sengar's appeal against his conviction in the case of the custodial death of the survivor's father is also pending, where he has sought suspension of sentence on the ground that he has already spent a substantial time in jail.
Shocking Scenes As Men From Central Force Manhandle Unnao Survivor's Mother
NEW DELHI, Dec 24: Shocking scenes played out on the roads of the national capital as paramilitary personnel blocked the Unnao rape survivor and her mother from addressing the media and also forced the elderly mother to jump off a moving bus. The survivor and her mother have been protesting against the Delhi High Court's relief to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who has been convicted of raping her.
The High Court has suspended the jail term of Sengar while imposing several conditions. The sentence has been suspended till his appeal against his conviction in the rape case is pending.
Last night, the survivor, her mother and lawyer-activist Yogita Bhayana staged a protest in India Gate and were detained. This morning, the mother-daughter had planned to speak to the media at Mandi House. But the CRPF-escorted bus they were in did not stop at Mandi House. A CRPF officer told NDTV that they had not been granted permission to protest at Mandi House or India Gate. They said the survivor and her mother would be taken to Jantar Mantar or back to their home.
Soon after, the survivor's mother was seen at the gate of the moving bus. CRPF officers were seen elbowing her and asking her to jump off the moving bus. Shockingly, there were no women CRPF personnel in the bus, even though it was transporting the survivor and her mother. After CRPF personnel kept pushing her, the survivor's mother jumped off the moving bus. The bus, the survivor inside it, drove away.
"We did not get justice. My daughter has been held captive. It seems they want to kill us. CRPF men took the girl and dropped me on the road. We will give up our lives. We were going to protest, but the CRPF men forcibly took her away. We were going to Mandi House to protest," she told the media.
The survivor, then 17, had been raped in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao in June 2017. The name of BJP MLA Sengar came up. He was expelled from the party. In 2019, he was convicted of raping a minor. He was also found guilty in connection with the custodial death of the survivor's father, who was initially framed in the sexual assault case.
The survivor, whose life was turned upside down ever since she raised her voice against the crime, said, "How can our judiciary do this to us?"
She highlighted that the court's relief to Sengar comes ahead of Uttar Pradesh polls and said she was determined to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court. "An emergency hearing should be held. This Kuldeep Singh has the money and power to get his way, and we have to suffer."
A CRPF officer said they were taking the survivor back to their Delhi home, where they had been living under CRPF protection after a string of tragedies and threats over the past eight years.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday suspended Sengar's life imprisonment and granted him conditional bail pending his appeal against the 2019 conviction. The court reasoned that under the pre-2019 POCSO Act, an MLA does not qualify as a "public servant" or person in "position of trust", reducing the applicable minimum sentence to seven years - Sengar has already spent over seven years in jail.
Conditions for the relief include a Rs 15 lakh personal bond, staying only in Delhi, no entry within 5 km of the survivor's home, no contact or threats to the family, surrender of passport, and weekly police reporting. Sengar remains behind bars for a 10-year sentence for the custodial death of the survivor's father.
On December 23, the survivor, her mother and activist Bhayana protested at India Gate, expressed fear for their safety and vowed to fight on. "We will challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. We're fighting for justice for 9 years, and I lost my husband in the process. Police intimidate us, manhandle us. My family is not safe."
Protests At Bangladesh High Commission In Delhi Over Hindu Man's Lynching
NEW DELHI, Dec 23: Huge protests have erupted outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi over the atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh and the mob lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, in Mymensingh. The situation remained tense as protestors managed to break barricades, while security forces tried to control the crowd.
Security was increased outside the High Commission ahead of a protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal over attacks on Hindus in the neighbouring country. The area has been secured with three layers of barricading, with force from the police and paramilitary deployed in the area.
The VHP and Bajrang Dal have announced a demonstration at the high commission building to denounce alleged atrocities against Hindus and vandalism of their religious places in Bangladesh.
Delhi in pollution chokehold as visibility drops, AQI breaches ‘severe’ mark in places; flights hit
NEW DELHI, Dec 19: With no respite from air pollution in sight, the national capital woke up to another day of dense fog, reduced visibility and an even more alarming air quality on Friday. The overall AQI in the city stood at 387 in the 'very poor' category but several parts saw readings crossing the 400-mark into the 'severe' category this morning.
Several airlines like Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet issued travel advisories for passengers warning that dense fog may hit flight schedules. The Delhi airport later confirmed that some flight ops were hit, assuring that officials were working to assist passengers.
Friday was another day of dense fog for the national capital early in the morning. Visuals from the city showed a thick fog engulfing the city as vehicles waded through the roads.
Similar visuals were seen at the Delhi airport too, where passengers were seen arriving amid a near-zero visibility.
Citing the weather department's dense fog warning in Delhi, several airlines like Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet warned of flight disruptions on Friday.
“Customers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport and allow extra time for travel, as low visibility may lead to slower traffic on the roads,” a part of IndiGo's tweet read. The airline witnessed mass cancellations earlier this month, disrupting travel plans of thousands of passengers.
SpiceJet also issued a similar advisory for its passengers, asking them to keep a check on their flight status.
Air India also informed passengers about their ‘FogCare’ initiative, through which they can receive advance alerts on their registered phone numbers, with the option to change their flights without any additional payment.
Gandhis Get Temporary Relief From Delhi Court In National Herald Case
NEW DELHI, Dec 16: A Delhi court on Tuesday refused to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate's money laundering case against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and five others in the National Herald case.
The Rouse Avenue Court said the agency's prosecution complaint – filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, or PMLA – was not maintainable since the case was based on a private complaint - i.e., filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy - and not a First Information Report, or FIR.
The court also pointed out that Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing had already registered an FIR in this case, meaning it will be 'premature and imprudent' to now rule on the ED's submission.
The Enforcement Directorate can, however, continue its investigation, the court said.
The EOW filed its submission last month; Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and five others, including the Congress' overseas unit chief, Sam Pitroda, had been accused of conspiring to 'fraudulently take-over Associated Journals Limited', the now-defunct National Herald newspaper's parent company.
Responding to the criminal conspiracy charges, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi mocked the Bharatiya Janata Party for 'conjuring a case (out) of its own twisted mind' and said the charges were 'the BJP' recycled obsession'. The BJP responded with taunts of its own; the party's National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh, told reporters the Congress 'is in a state of panic, frustration, and outcry'.
Some of the Congress' allies, including Priyanka Chaturvedi from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, came out to bat for the under-fire party. "The National Herald charges are nothing but a political witch hunt... a tool the BJP applies time to time to attack opposition voices. Shame that agencies continue to bend backwards to please political masters."
The National Herald, founded by Jawaharlal Nehru and others in 1938, was a newspaper owned and published by AJL. The newspaper went offline in 2008 with debts of Rs 90.21 crore, but it retained real estate assets then worth an estimated Rs 2,000 crore.
These, the ED has claimed, are now worth Rs 5,000 crore.
In November 2012 Swamy filed a private complaint alleging the Gandhis and other senior Congress leaders had fraudulently taken over AJL; he claimed the Congress leaders had taken over the properties for a mere Rs 50 lakh. These included the Herald House in Delhi and properties in Mumbai.
These alone are worth, reportedly, a combined Rs 661 crore.
There are also allegations AJL had been using these properties - given by the union government of the time to only to run its newspaper operations - for commercial purposes. In other words, AJL had allegedly been getting rent worth lakhs of rupees.
These 'proceeds of crime', are worth Rs 998 crore, the ED has claimed.
UP highway pile-up & fire toll now 13, video shows scale of fog-triggered mishap
MATHURA, Dec 16: At least 13 people have died in a huge fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district after seven buses and three cars collided near Milestone 127 in a pile-up caused by dense fog in the early hours of Tuesday. The toll was initially four, who were charred to death, but there were about 25 people injured, of whom have nine have since succumbed, police officials said.
A video of the aftermath of the tragedy surfaced on social media. The video showed police and rescue teams on the spot.
“The incident took place at 4.30 AM on Tuesday at Milestone 127 of the Yamuna Expressway because of low visibility caused by dense fog. Seven buses and three cars piled up due to low visibility because of fog,” Mathura SSP Shlok Kumar told the media after reaching the spot of the incident.
“The traffic was diverted during rescue operation and injured are shifted by ambulances. Fire has been doused,” the SSP added.
Online Classes For Nursery To Class 5 In Delhi Schools Amid Severe Pollution
NEW DELHI, Dec 15: Students from nursery to Class 5 will have to study in virtual mode compulsorily due to rising air pollution, the Delhi government said today.
Until now, the Delhi government gave a choice to parents whether they want to send their children to school or attend classes online. Now, there is no such choice.
"In view of the prevailing high AQI levels in Delhi, it has been decided that classes in physical mode for students of nursery to Class 5 are discontinued till further orders for all government, government aided and unaided private recognized schools of Delhi," the Directorate of Education said in a circular today.
"All heads of schools are hereby directed to ensure classes in online mode for the students of these classes. However, rest of the classes will continue to be conducted as per directions issued [earlier]..." it said.
Delhi's air quality index (AQI) stood in the 'severe' category on Monday with a reading of 427, after touching the second highest AQI on record for December on Sunday at 461.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality was 'severe' at 27 monitoring stations across the city on Monday, with 12 stations in the 'very poor' range. Wazirpur recorded the worst air quality at 475.
According to the CBCP, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
Delhi Pollution Worsens, Air Quality Turns Severe, Thick Smog Covers City
NEW DELHI, Dec 14: The national capital, Delhi, on Sunday woke up to a thick layer of smog, with air quality lingering in the 'severe' category. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 462 at 6 am.
All 40 monitoring stations in Delhi show 'red', meaning AQI in the 'severe' category. Rohini in North West Delhi recorded AQI of 499 with particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) as the major pollutant, followed by Jahangirpuri and Vivek Vihar reporting AQI at 495.
Several areas in Delhi also reported low visibility due to smog. Visuals from Patparganj in East Delhi, where AQI was recorded at 488 at 6 am, showed people driving slowly with headlights on.
The AQI is a public health tool designed to communicate air pollution levels or the quality of air. Eight pollutants namely particulate matter (PM) 10, PM2.5, Ozone (O3), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), lead (Pb) and ammonia (NH3) act as major parameters in deriving the AQI of an area, as per the CPCB.
According to CPCB, an AQI within 0-50 is considered 'good,' 51-100 'satisfactory,' 101-200 'moderate,' 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor,' and 401-500 'severe.' Each of these categories reflects the level of pollution and the associated health risks. For example, an AQI in the 'severe' category is hazardous even for healthy people, and one should avoid going out or exercising in the open.
4 tourists among 25 killed in fire at Goa nightclub
PANAJI, Dec 7: At least 25 people, including four tourists and 14 staff members, were killed in a fire that gutted Birch, a popular club in Goa. Preliminary investigations reveal that most of the victims died of suffocation after the fire broke out in the club’s basement, which lacked proper ventilation.
The fire broke out at the nightclub “Birch” in North Goa’s Arpora late Saturday night. Preliminary investigation reveals that the blaze began in the basement of the club at around 11.45 pm. It is suspected to have then spread to the first floor, which houses a bar and restaurant. At least 25 people, including four tourists and 14 staff members, were killed, and six others were injured.
Although police initially received information suggesting a cylinder blast, injuries sustained by the victims suggest otherwise. Goa DGP Alok Kumar said, “The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. We are also checking if the club had complied with fire safety norms and whether they had the requisite fire-safety NOC.”
Investigators are also examining whether the blaze may have been triggered by a pyro sparkle gun—often used at parties and events—that may have come into contact with flammable material on the roof, causing the fire to spread rapidly.
DANTEWADA, Dec 3: At least 12 Maoists and three District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel were killed during a gunfight in a major anti-Maoist operation that is underway in the West Bastar Division of Chhattisgarh along the Bijapur–Dantewada inter-district border, officials said.
The encounter began around 9am when a joint team of Dantewada–Bijapur DRG, the Special Task Force (STF), CRPF and CoBRA commandos launched a search operation in the dense forest region.
Intermittent firing between Maoists and security personnel continued throughout the day in which another jawan also sustained injuries.
Bijapur superintendent of police Jitendra Yadav said the operation is in a “decisive phase” and that an “aggressive offensive” against Maoists is underway. Additional reinforcement teams have been rushed and the entire area has been cordoned off.
The bodies of 12 Maoist cadres have been recovered from the site of the encounter, and forces have seized SLR rifles, .303 rifles and other weapons and ammunition. The identities of those killed are yet to be established.
Three DRG Bijapur personnel — head constable Monu Vadadi and constables Dukaru Gonde and Ramesh Sodi — laid down their lives during the gunfight. Another DRG jawan — Somdev Yadav — was injured and has been administered first aid. He is said to be out of danger, while further medical arrangements have been made.
With this, the number of Maoists killed in encounters in Chhattisgarh this year has risen to 270. Of them, 241 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which includes seven districts such as Bijapur and Dantewada. Twenty-seven were killed in Gariaband district of the Raipur division, while two were neutralised in Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district in the Durg division.
Sundarraj P, inspector general of police of the Bastar Range, said the anti-Maoist campaign remains “intense and strategically driven”. He added that since the operation is still in progress, detailed information cannot be shared at this stage.
“Further information will be released at an appropriate time once the operation is complete,” Sundarraj said. |
